I hope you can still find ammo for it, since you know, all these people are buying ammo and shooting it.

.30-06 hasn't ever been sold out anywhere this whole time.

Also, that crap is getting old already.

Sometimes I have to second guess what I post. I usually try and be very friendly, especially in here. My original reply was a bit much. That whole other thread was very stupid on my part.

My dad has one that is unfired since it went through the CMP. I keep telling him he needs to at least get the scope sighted in.

it would be fun to shoot, but it really doesn't have any historical collector value IMO. notice it must be sent to a 01 FFL, not 03 C&R because of the rebuild.

My grandfather bought the rifle in the 60s from the CMP but never bothered to find the scope and rings for it. My father found those things and has them mounted up but it's not even boresighted. It's a perfect specimen.

All that scope does is give you some fucking cross hairs. It's a fucking shitty platform.

I have 2 real ones and they do nothing but make out in the safe.

Oh I forgot, it's not selective fire.

There's nothing wrong with the action on those rifles, it's a modified Mauser design which is still one of the most popular designs even 100+ years later.

Yeah, not a machine gun. You're late on that band wagon.

Im not specifically saying the gun sucks, just teh platform. I love 03s. But A4s fucking blow big fucking dick for what they are.

All GI scopes up until Vietnam sucked. The Weaver 330, M82, M84 and so on. The Marines had it figured with the Unertl.

But you already knew all that.

Well yeah, they were all low-power 3/4" optics until the Unertl came along. My father has a Rem 700 with a Burris Black Diamond on it, but the 03A4 is just a neat rifle to have in a collection.

Yes, the optic on an 03A4 is nothing great compared to the M1941's Unertl.
However, it does offer 2 advantages over the irons:
    1) single focal plane of target and sights
    2) a little magnification to help with target discrimination

So in that respect, it really is an improvement over the standard infantry rifle. And also it's important to keep in mind that the US Army, at the time, didn't really have a "sniper" doctrine, but it was closer to a "designated marksman" role. Barry Pepper's role from SPR notwithstanding.

Not saying it's a world-beating pinnacle if excellence, but it's a cool piece. I wish I had one, for starters. David 4x4, interested in parting with one of yours?
