like will they outcast me if i let them know i was Demo or express my opinions against Repub??
most people in the armed forces are tolerant and educated and most people just learn to shut their mouth.
but sometimes someone will make a loud verbal announcement of their opinion, such as "those fucking towelheads should be shot" or "puppies are totally for fags", at this time you should either shut up and nod and smile a little bit or make a point to respond.
You are either mildly retarded or very young, because this kind of question isn't normal....
They will hate you for being an idiot, not a republican. Seriously what a dumbass question.
One of my good officer buddies is very liberal. He is however very educated on the subject and able to carry on intelligent conversations. Because he's educated he also doesn't spit out the stupid rhetoric that you hear most liberals spout, we get in depth conversations going on. His ideas aren't that far off, its teh remaining 5-10% of each subject that we vastly disagree on.
Yes, he is poked fun at, but not at an outcast level. I also met a two star democrat and he was proud of the fact.
edit, oh and they're right - nobody will give a shit about your opinion. If you keep your mouth shut about it and don't try and 'express your opinion' that nobody cares about, you'll be ok.
Cartman: "Are you saying that one fourth of Americans are retards?"
Kyle: "Yes, I'm saying that one fourth of Americans are retards"
Stan: "Yea, at least one fourth"
no, you don't. Your competence is more important than your beliefs
I make those bold statements in a very dry monotone voice like "We should truck all of those faggot hippies to Afghanistan and level the place with a nuke."
I then see how people react and call them racist, no matter how they respond. Most of the time the realize I am screwing with them.
I know this is late, but I think this (smiley) every time I read-over this thread.
EDIT: I just realized that his post should have the word democrat not republican.
No one gives a damn what party you voted for when stuff is blowing up around you and you're being shot at.
No but politics do not belong in the military, furthermore it's a taboo subject. We are supposed to be an impartial arm of the government.
we talked about politics all the time.
but we usually ended the conversations by calling each other an idiot.
I would think that a lot of people in the military have ties to democrats whether they are family ties or friends. There are a lot of minorities in the military and statistically more minorities vote Democrat so I don't think you'd have a problem. Even if most the people in the armed forces may sooner or later become Republican, I think its more because the Republicans tend to look after the military more. Not because of all the other issues that Dems and Rep fight over. So for the most part a lot of the guys you're goint to serve with probably have family members who are liberals so they probably will hold no grudge.
I knew a white guy who would make racist jokes about black people, none were very hardcore, mostly just chicken and moonpie stuff. What the newbies didn't know was that he was married to a black woman. Doesn't make it right, but no one called MEO.
That was one funny guy.
the only time I've ever called someone an idiot for their political beliefs was when some uber-conservative republican Sergeant said America had a worse terrorism problem than Israel
It was all in good fun. Like "You're an idiot - let's go eat." Or "You're an idiot - go inventory the tool boxes."
more like "you're an idiot, YOU go inventory the tool boxes, private!"
at least I got promoted, I really hated being called private. Especially by people less educated and intelligent than I.
I'll call you private!
I'll, uh, not.....answer to that
