I tried to edit a few pictures I took today on photoshop, once I was done with them doing my usual resizing and exporting I uploaded a few to facebook (like I tend to do) and they are pretty bad

the blacks are super pixelated and just, well horrible

I marked the memory card and I guess from now on I will not try to use it as much

has anyone experienced something similar? :squint:

edit, its a sandisk extreme III

yes they do - but your problem is not the flash card.

the flash card going bad would give you glitchy / unreadable files, your problem is most likely due to:
-adjustments applied to an underexposed image
    -export settings / colour profile
    -facebook doing a further compression

I hate it when they do that... :squint:

I had one that made all of my pictures out of focus. Thing sucked. Tamron made it.

I exchanged it, and the new one is razor sharp!

If you're using Lightroom, export with the e-mail setting if you're planning to upload to facebook. If the quality and file is too high, FB will hack the picture to death and you'll loose a lot of image data.

does anyone know when FB intervenes and does their own compression? I think it would be useful to know what file size to keep it under...

I resize to 800px on the long edge for all FB photos and they come out just fine. But i'm also not concerned with utmost quality for FB uploads either.

The whole card can go bad when it runs out of back up space. The memory has a finite amount of R/W, which is pretty low in comparison to read/write space on say a typical platter disk. The problem is that when a block is detected by the internal controller as going bad, it blocks that block of data so you can never write/read that block again to prevent data corruption. Depending on the quality of the card, depends on how many almost dead blocks will come from factory. QC on CF cards is really bad on the non SanDisk ones, the good SanDisk ones show up almost identical every time (If you open up fdisk and do a block level comparison you will notice usually two same size cards from same manufacturers are going to be different sizes and different physical geometry (Heads, Cylenders, Block Size).

But seeing as it is a sanDisk this should be ruled out already...

As for your problem, it is facebook's resizing/compressing algorithm. They are horrible about it, I mean think about it, they give unlimited storage to every one of their 300million users, with no sign of revenue in sight...

Try to compress the image more with photoshop first, so maybe it will skip facebook's compression engine if it is small enough (probably not but might get compressed differently) also make sure to resize in photoshop and not let facebook resize for you.

    Funny story about this.

When I worked part time at a Ritz many years ago at a time when P&S digitals were just becoming popular, an old lady came in to get photos printed. Employee dropped the card when handed it and made a joke saying that "now all the photos will be out of focus."

Well, turned out she sucked and every shot on the card WAS out of focus. He then had one hell of a time, along with the manager, convincing her that he was just joking, it was her fault and there was no way that dropping the card would make them out of focus.
