I saw this article today( http://thefitcast.com/?p=199 ) and then I talked to a few other coworkers and the consensus seems to be that assisted pullups are worthless and that seated rows are better. However this article seems to talk about using some kind of bands to make pullups effective, anyone have experience with them?

    Pullups are pullups.

Like anything else, don't stand there and do 100x assisted pullups, and then think you're accomplishing something. But if you can't do at least 5 unassisted, everyone has to start somewhere. :o

I leave my pride at the door when I walk into the gym.

I remember back in around november or so, i could do 6 unassisted pullups max. This wasn't even with a widegrip or anything, in fact, it wasn't even on a normal straight bar...it was on one of those things that stick out, like 2 little bars that stick out and you grasp your hands around em, as if you were to do close grip pulldowns....now i can easily do 10 widegrip palms facing away pullups, i can probably get 20 too, i can even do 10 with +25 weight if i want to...they're becoming too easy now...So people are right, everyone has to start somewhere.

yes, they suck. I'd get a much better workout doing 1 or 2 WG 250lb pullups versus 8-10 180lb pullups

as for subbing in seated rows, I really dont' see those as swappable exercises. one's a vertical plane exercise, while the other is horizontal. they'd hit the lat et al differently

I dont agree at all...you cant get much out of 1-2 reps.

As for the assisted pullups, do them and decrease the ammount of assistance untill you can easily handle a few pullups unasisted. Thats how I started...

Since I'm a fatass and can only do about 4-5 unassisted pullups at a time I'll occasionally jump on the assist machine to bang out higher reps and focus on squeezing my lats.

Rack chins are also a good option.

I agree. If you can only do one or two unassisted, use the assist and minimize it and/or slowly reduce it so you are doing most of the work until you can do maybe 5 or so unassisted. Then build from there.

My first set I can do 10. I drop down from there, usually 7 then 5 then another 5.

Are we defining "pullups" as palms away and "chins" as palms facing you like you're doing a curl?

Oh word I never do chins then. The bar at my gym also has a thing where you can do them with your palms facing each other which makes it easier.
