I'm stuck at my parents' house for a few weeks, and I'm forced to use either a MacBook or an Intel iMac. The iMac would be fucking brilliant if the keyboard wasn't made for 2-year-olds and the mouse wasn't made for retards.. and the OS wasn't complete garbage.

But mainly, I can't find any free software at all for these fucking things. The best free FTP client I've found is the FireFTP plugin for FireFox, but it's not compatible with FireFox 3.0. And apparently having both versions on one Mac is a sin against nature. The only other free FTP client I've found at all for Mac is something called CyberDuck, and it's fucking awful. Is there seriously nothing on Mac to compare with SmartFTP for Windows?

And apparently there isn't a single free programmer's text editor for Mac. When I was choosing one for Windows, it took me a few days to pick one BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY OPTIONS. Macs have NO options.

The only saving grace on this POS is that PokerStars has a Mac client in beta that I can use, so at least I'm not ready to kill myself out of sheer boredom [yet].

I think I might have a serial stuffed in my email for some virtual software on Mac. How hard is that to set up?

VMWare Fusion and Parallels are easy enough to set up if you are really adament about using another OS. All I need is terminal and I'm good to go. Learn vim or emacs. It'll pay off in the long run.

I can use a terminal text editor.. but it's not nearly as awesome as Notepad++

Aquamacs is the only thing I've found that was free for Mac.. and it still pales in comparison to Notepad++

the FTP situation is far more annoying than the text editor, though.

To get the macs to even show all of my web files I had to enter some terminal command.. that was the ONLY way without downloading a new application :ugh2:

just because a file is named .htaccess, it's hidden and can't be made visible without showing all of the system files, too :ugh2:

You'd be surprised how much you can do with vim/emacs. It does take some time to learn all the shortcuts though.

I use SSH/SCP from terminal instead of FTP, but NcFTP is a good command-line FTP client if it really must be FTP. The .htaccess isn't visible through finder because files that begin with a '.' are hidden files. However, I do remember needing to manually modify some setting to see these files from finder.

it won't let me install something even though I'm a fucking admin, what the fuck

it wanted to authenticate, and I accidentally hit cancel, but it copied temp files fucking anyway and now it just asks if I want to replace them or stop and when I hit replace it says I'm not allowed.

I'M A FUCKING ADMIN, YOU FUCKING POS OS.

the color/spacing formatting of notepad++ is what makes it awesome. I can BREEZE through web files

NcFTP seemed to install.. but where the hell did it go? it isn't showing up under applications.

the install process was way too complicated for it to just disappear. had like 6 different windows.

It is a command-line application, so you need to run it from terminal. You can do color/spacing in vim/emacs as well.

If you have a what.cd account you'd be breezy right now.

TextMate and Transmit for FTP is my setup for developing on my mac. I downloaded Coda but I haven't messed with it yet. Worth using?
