Hi, I'm one of the many idiots that bought the macbook at launch, and thus I am fucked out of the Dual Layer dvd burning drive. I guess the assfucks at apple thought the early adopters didn't have a need for such technology :ugh:

Anyway, I'm calling AppleCare next week about another problem, and it's going to go back to them for repairs... any way I can talk them into putting a DL drive in for me? :hsughno:

interesting. I wouldn't mind as long as they can keep it under $100-150 :dunno: that sound about reasonable?

yeah, you're looking at a decent about of money, but if you think about it, if you pay for the dual layer, then you have to get the single-layer back when they ship it back to you, so just sell that

Why not just get an external that's faster...and cheaper?

I need DL in order for me to back up my movies, wihtout any compression. So I really need the space. I've been doing this on my desktop, but I'm getting rid of it, and it just occured to me that the macbook never came with one.

I've looked at externals, but couldn't find shit. Only thing I found was an IDE enclosure for like 30 bucks. I guess I could buy an internal, and stick it in the enclosure, hook it up via USB... but I doubt OS X would recognize it :greddy: I guess I'll see what the folks @ apple care say, I'm gonna rip them a new asshole anyway since this is the third time it has to go in about the same goddamned issue.

I'm probably going to wait until the HD DVD / BD are burnable and then get an external that will do those as well. :eek3:

you can already get BD/HD DVD burners :hsugh:

my only problem with externals is whether or not fucking OS X will recognize it.

i guess I could always buy the enclosure for the external drive, hook up my dual layer dvd burner from my PC, and see if it works. It's going to be IDE->USB. Anyone think that might cause some problems?

In the description of the enclosure, they basically say that in order to have DL functionality, one must have at least OS 8.something :hsughno:

    Yeah, that would work.

Just get an encloser for it. You actually don't really even need an enclosure, just one of those adapters that are like 20 bucks and you'd be good to go.

And I don't see a problem with "os x recognizing it" - this is hardly an issue anymore.

Also, try and get a firewire800 encloser if you're going to go that route.

Right on. Looks like there are many enclosures to choose from, all of which are about $30 bucks. FW800 would be useless, as i have a macbook and of course Apple won't even make that an option. I'm not sure if FW400 is worth it over USB2.0 :dunno:
