I got the idea to make a cheap, light weight, incognito camera bag that I could lug around without drawing too much attention. So I went to the army surplus store and picked up this bag for $20:

I'm lining it with some egg crate foam until I can find something better:

Here's a mock up with my D80 in it. The goal is to carry 1 body with a lens attached and 2 other lenses or 1 other lens and a flash. I'm going to add compartments to separate the body from the lenses.

What do you guys think? Feasible or Fail?

    I'm thinking "Why?"

There are camera bags that look like that.

my 7 million dollar home holds 4 lenses, a flash, my zoom or UWA on the body with a grip, and some. Plus its padded properly. 98 dollars new.

Because they cost more than $20? :dunno:

If you sewed something over the nasty egg stuff and put it some dividers, I suppose itll get the job done. I dont know how long that foam is going to last though. Doesnt it normally fall apart?

If he puts the same padding on the bottom, thats easily more padding than any crumpler

Yea, but its an unreasonable amount and not evenly distributed. If he puts that bag on his shoulder it will stick out like a foot due to the padding and camera body. It wont fit right

    $20 and I'm bored :dunno:

I'm not sold on the egg crate stuff, but it's what I had laying around the office.

I'm not looking to hold a lot. My other bags can do that. I just want something for 1 body and 1 or two lenses. And again, I'm bored and want to do something different.

    Already on the bottom.

You might be right. I haven't put it all together and carried it yet.

thought about sewing the egg crate stuff with cardboard in the middle of two pieces across, so you make "compartments" and kind of add some rigidity to the whole thing?

If I were to pick it up and carry it now...yes. But I'm not finished. Right now I'm MacGyvering things with carboard, velcro and foam, tootpicks, gum wrappers and a paperclip to keep everything in it's place. :mamoru:

My point was this; you're making a bag that looks like camera bags that are already out there. If being "incognito" and "not drawing too much attention" to what is actually going to be a camera bag, if that was part of your goal, well... I'm not so sure that's the bag to start with.

I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin.

Well if there was nikon stuff, nobody would want to steal it anyways.

True, but if I can get this bag to work for ~$20 as good as the other bags out there ($100+), I'm golden. If not, I'm only out 20 bucks.

I've heard that before. And I've got a couple of those around the house. Having girls though, my wife had to get all pink diaper bags and I'm not about to carry those around. :mamoru: Maybe I can steal the padding though.
