I just watched Taxi to the Dark Side via my highspeed streaming netflix sub and I was in awe... Not sure if any of you have watched it but even if you haven't I was wondering if anyone had ever seen detainee mistreatment with commanders fully aware. Sorry this seems like one of the hippy bandwagon posts because in truth i'm not at all and am actually pretty even handed. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts...

Maybe not, but when you're fighting a group of people who will not follow international law, why should you stretch yourself to apply international law to an individual who has exempted himself from being protected by international law?

The Geneva Conventions very clearly define what lawful and unlawful combatants are. If the United States broke international law in the treatment of LAWFUL combatants, heads need to roll.

The treatment of unlawful combatants is far, far less well defined. If a person is both an unlawful combatant, and a person who breaks established international law concerning the targeting of civilian populations, they basically have no rights.

I dont think thats true man, from what I remember unlawful combatants are basically like lawful ones, except that they cant claim POW status (getting released immediately after the war and all that) but that doesnt mean we can torture them. The only people who have no rights at all vs the LOACs are spies, mercenaries and terrorists (not the media's definition of a terrorist, but more like a cell operating in your home country).

The decision to condone and/or order the torture of prisoners is the only major thing about Bush's 8 years that I had a serious issue with. Up until now, we always held the high ground on that issue. And when one of our soldiers was captured by an enemy government, we could tell them that very bad things would happen if they tortured our men. Whereas now, all we can say is "you bad guys are just like us".

Now we've pretty much guaranteed that any time an enemy captures our guys, they are going to torture them. They are going to say "you guys did it - so you should have no problem when we do it too".

This will be one of Bush's most enduring legacies. :wtc:

There's a bigger issue than that is directly connected with the torture cases which I have a problem with :hsugh:
