Basically all I want to do is make a bootable image of my hard drive on my laptop in the event that my hdd gets fucked up whilst I am installing linux and attempting to make my lappy dual boot. I was wondering what software I should use.

Also norton ghost wouldn't work(maybe you can show me how to do it with norton).

Can you use Norton Ghost to make a bootable floppy with whatever drivers you need on it? (Probably just USB, maybe FireWire too.) You could use that to boot up and run Ghost straight from the floppy.

Also, Ghost seems to cooperate better when you run a Partition => Image operation instead of a Drive => Image operation. Unless you've chopped up your hard drive, the two operations have exactly the same result.

I don't even have a floppy drive and norton seems not to like my laptop too much. is there any way I can backup the mbr to a bootable cd so I can restore it in the event that I screw it up. The mbr is all I really need to be able to restore.

Do you have a network share you can backup to? True Image will backup and restore over a network. You can make a bootable CD with the program on it for restoring. It'll restore from the network, but oddly, not from a local USB drive.
