My SO and I usually would chat on AIM during work, but her bosses made them remove it from their computers since the company switched to some “in house” messaging network.

Is there a discrete messaging service that she and I could use, maybe something that opens in a browser window, like AIM Express? We can’t use anything AIM related, because her boss still uses it and knows when anyone is logged on…

You could use a site that has CGI IRC. Or you could both work instead of slacking off?

    1) It's spelled "discreet". "Discrete" = "clearly defined boundaries".

    2) Tell her to change her username to one that her boss doesn't know about.

I thought it looked weird spelled that way, but spell check didn't mark it. Now I know why. :o

Her boss took AIM off of everyone's computer, so I can't really go that route. That, and she floats around the office from time to time and might notice if she reloaded it.

Well the idea of just making a different screenname would also involve you using aim express so there would just be the browser windows.

    What about a non-AIM option?

I'm on an older Mac here at work, and the AIM Express loads like crap on it.

Then buy a couple of Blackberries and IM each other that way.

Who uses a Mac at their office? Can you install Firefox on it? It'll work better than whatever crap browser came with the machine.

there is always gmail. if you both have gmail accounts and have it open, you can gchat with each other without loading any client software.

    :werd:

It's an old Mac and it has OS9 on it. Long story, but I do more editing on printed hard copies than on a computer so the company doesn't really have an urge to upgrade. I mainly use my computer here for work emails, OT, and etc.

I use Netscape becasue that's the only browser that will load some web pages correctly.

I usually just text message her back and forth through our mobile phones, but that doesn't really give the illusion that I'm working all of the time and is a pain.

I'm not familiar with that, but will look into it.

Something discreet, with minimal (or no) client software would be ideal.

    I do work.

This is for down time which is few and far between. Just want it there when I "need" it.

They don't care about that or if I use AIM. It's pretty laid back here.

It's just easier to type on the computer keyboard here.

    Noted, thanks.

Some people out there are just jealous of people with laid back, cool office jobs. :wiggle:

Um, I own my own company. I come when I want. I go when I want. I take lunch whenever I want and for however long I want. If I want to go to LA for a week, I do it. If I want to yell at someone, I can do it. If I want to look at porn while "working" then I can do it. If I want to make a personal call I do it.

Trust me, I am not jealous of your job. I am certain that I have more freedom.

ah yes, stupid cliches.... :hsugh:

I have employees. And I don't tolerate insolence or disobedience... You follow the rules and I reward very well. But don't be trying to hack shit, or break the rules.

No IM means no IM. It doesn't mean "find a loophole/way around".

don't worry.... If I had hired you I imagine it wouldn't have lasted long, anyway.

I'm pretty easy-going when people ask permission and are up-front with me.

But when people start hiding shit and finding ways around what I instruct, then they get their final check.

Interestingly, I don't have that much turn-around. People generally get the point that if you just follow the rules you get paid well. :eek4: amazing!
