Recently I tried to minimize the background services that were running while using Windows XP Pro. For some reason, now my PC will not support Plug-N-Play printers and if I try to "Add a New Printer", I get an error message saying that "Print Spooler is not running" and it refuses to let me.

    What can I do?

    start the print spooler service.

    This is required for printing.

Go to the Admin tools folder in the control panel. Scroll down the list, look for print spooler. Right-click and start. It would be a good idea to set it to automatically start since it is required to print.

    Lesson for all:

When working with services, if you don't know exactly what it does and does not do, then don't fucking touch it!

    No doubt....

I still cannot re-start the Print Spooling service though, very strange. I really, really hope that I do not have to re-install Windows to fix this.

BTW, it says that the "Print Spooler" service is in fact started and running, but it will not recognize any printer I plug into it (they all previously worked fine). Farking XP.

I'm don't think I'd agree that the print spooler system controls the auto-detection of printers in Windows. You may have another issue.

Do you have the plug and play service running? What other services did you shhutdown?
