    Ladies and gentlemen. As of 31 July, 2008, I will be retired from the United States Navy having served 20 years and 6 months worth of honored and faithful service.

    If you're going to do 15 or 16 years, you may as well do 20 and get a little paycheck at the end.

    I do know some folks that got out at 17 years. One of them won the lottery. The other got a job offer he couldn't refuse.

    Yep, the guy was a E6, stationed at Norfolk. He won the VA lottery. $17 million I believe. He was at 17 years and decided to get out.

    Most government jobs count towards the 20 years for retirement. And of course you could always finish it off in the reserves too.

    I'm pretty sure they make you get out if you win the lottery? That's what I've heard.
