so i'm looking to get something a bit more than my canon sd20..

I was looking at either a digital rebel xt or the nikon d50..

also, any particularly good places to look for deals
and inexpensive glass? (prob want a good zoom and maybe a macro?)

350D user here, I am quite happy with it. Can be had for reasonable prices if you are just getting into dSLR, and glass is 'affordable' - such a subjective term, I know.

$200 or so for an okay lens, $500+ for what most of these people consider 'good' glass.

I no experience with the Nikon D50 but it seems to be a good camera. I use the Canon 350D and have no major complaints. I'd suggest the body only and purchasing a $70 lense, the Canon 50mm f/1.8 to learn the camera then once you're ready to upgrade you have more choices. ie Canon 28-105L , Tamron 28-75 for everyday use.

crop factor makes the 50mm suck

    35mm f/2.0 is better imo

if you get the d50, get body only. the kit lens isn't very good. if you get the d70s, the kit lens is very good. 350d, ditch the kit lens and get body only.

I'm referring to Canon lenses. Canon doesn't have a 35mm f/2.0; the Nikon unit is ~ $250. My suggestion was a inexpensive lense to start out before dumping money in lower/mid-range lenses. (Nikon's 50mm f/1.8 is $95 for comparison).

I was an entry level DSLR user. I bought the Canon 300D about 4-5 months before the 350D was released. I purchased it from www.butterflyphoto.com .......and I got a pretty good deal. I bought a Sigma lens kit with a wide angle and a macro/zoom lens for fairly cheap. They aren't bad lens..........good enough for a starter. I wouldn't bother getting a nice piece of glass until you commit yourself enough into the hobby to reek the benefit of having it.

Buy the camera and at least 2-3 lens for under $500 total. Get used to the camera..........make sure its something you can learn to like, THEN spend the cheese.

I bought the 50 mm f/1.8 for shits and giggles (arrived today). For $70, I can't complain.

Just a quicky shot to test it out, settings: f/2.8, iso 200, 1/50 shutter, white balance set to fluro lighting, flash bounced off ceiling (350D). Sure has hell beats my shitty Sigma 28-70 lol

It's my dining room table, which I read the newspaper on so all the little dust and crap get caught in the fabric.

Please give me some comparisons of D50 vs D70. What's a situation where a D70 owner says, "I'm sure glad I spent the extra on the D70". And you D50 owners, are there situations where you wished you bought a D70?

I usually check eBay's closed listings to see what market value is of D50's and D70's. Is there a place that routinely has better deals than on eBay?
