I'm getting the Digital Rebel XTi kit around x-mas, and I was wondering what a good lens to buy for it was, $300 or under. If you recommend skipping the kit and just getting the body, $400 or under for the lens.

    Either the Tamron 28-75 2.8 or Tamron 17-50 2.8.

If you shoot more landscape type stuff get the 17-50.

If you're going to be shooting your friends a lot at house parties or what not, get the 28-75.

The 28-75 is cheaper, has quieter focusing, and is FF compatable (not like you care)

The 17-50 is extremely sharp (if you get a good copy) slightly better built than the 28-75, but is not FF compatable.

I was thinking a lens for all-around shooting, maybe 70-200. Anything that can takes all kinds of photos and is under $300.

under $300. hrm get the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 that's what i have and a lot of people like it. the 28-200 is probably not very sharp. the good canon lenses are the "L" lenses, primes, the canon 10-22. but i have the tamron 28-75 on my canon 30D and i love it.

    my gear:
    tamron 28-75 f/2.8
    canon 10-22 f/3.5-4.5
    canon 70-200 f/2.8L
    canon 50 f/1.8 II

so i have my wide angle lens, my walk around lens, and my fast telephoto lens, and my sharp prime lens

I've got them both and they're very well worth the money.
