My mother borrowed a SONY MAVICA (saves on CDRs) from work. It holds a lot of pictures but doesnt take the best pictures. What do you guys feel would be a nice replacement for a camera that takes beautiful pictures for around $300 and allows you to adjust the shutter, apperture and has the BULB setting?

im not familiar with the bulb setting.

i paid $300 for my olympus c-4000, used. you can get them new for under $400, which is a bit over your budget.

i recall my canon a70 to have all those features that you needed. i paid $350 when it first came out, and i see deals on them for under $300 now.

As far as i know, only the A70 has the manual features in that price range.

    I could be wrong

    The Mavica is too consumer-ish.

I second the Canon A70 ($299.95, 3.2 MP). It has all the manual features you're looking for.

The next manual point-and-shoot is the Canon G2 for $499. Nikon has a manual one (Coolpix 4500) for $699. After $800, most of the cameras have options for manual shutter and aperture.

The 'cheap' point-and-shoot Nikons take really nice shots.

I wouldnt mind a point and shoot camera but i like to be able to control my shutter speed and aperture for control of my depth of field and paining and such. If i wasnt into such effects i would get a point and shoot

VERY! within a 2-3 week period i bought and tried out the sony p72, nikon 3100, canon a70, then the olympus c4000.

everything about the camera is great...but:

-i dont like the lens cap, its a hassle putting it on and taking it off. when its on, its feels a bit flimsy. but no big problem in any way.

-i wish this camera has a longer zoom. 3x is great, but the day i brought the camera to a zoo, i knew having a longer zoom is so much better. 8x and 10x would be very  but having 4mp and anything more than 3x zoom is out of my price range.

-only other small thing is that the camera losses the manual settings if you leave the camera without batteries for more than a couple hours. but i just buy a set of alkalines to keep its memory while my rechargables are charging.

you will enjoy it. and i love the super macro mode.

I've done a lot of research and decided that this is the camera I want :big grin: My bf has a nikon coolpix 950 (it's a few years old now) and his major complaint is that it eats batteries like no tomorrow. Plus, lately for some reason, it's not taking as sharp a picture as it should.

    Hmmmm.
