after some reading, they seem to perform similar tasks such as making it shine. do they have to go together? would it be just as effective if only wax is applied?

Polish brings out the shine even more and is applied before wax. Wax makes the paint very smooth and beads the water.... i think.

Yeah basicaly.. polish restores oils to the paint and brings out the glossiness. It doesnt really have any protective qualities. so you polish first to bring the gloss out, and then seal it in with a wax, which will protect the shine, and give you more of a smooth surface for greater reflectivity.

btw, you guys think polishing would help bringing the faded color on my rear spoiler back? the fading is kind of serious that it's very obvious to see. the car is milano red.

Yes, it would. That's what I would recommend for any faded part of the car. Try some Final Polish. The link to get it is around here somewhere.
