    ...and regular octane gas is in the mid $2 range. Diesel fuel cars has lost its advantage as far as miles per $. Civic/Corolla > TDI. :noes:

    Yes, but add in the extra cost of fuel, it actually cost more to drive them per mile. :noes:

    plant oil fuel > fossil fuel

    You can go 1600 miles on a tank of diesel with a oil fuel kit.

    $3.30/gal for diesel in a TDI will get you what? 45mpg?

    $2.50/gal of reg unleaded will get you about 33ish in a civic.

    whats the result?

    7.333_ cents per mile in the TDI
    7.57_ cents per mile in the civic

    advantage still lies with the TDI

    $3 a gallon @ 55mpg... vs $2.40 a gallon @ 30mpg

    Diesel FTW @ 5 cents a mile vs 8 cents a mile for gasoline

    Not when you factor in the $5k premium over a Civic.

    Diesel has always been right around or a bit more than premium gasoline here.

    2005 VW Jetta (for instance)
    GL (4 cyl gas engine) = 30mpg highway
    TDI = 44mpg highway

    Gas = $2.60/gal
    Diesel = $3/gal

    Gas = 8.6 cents / mile
    Diesel = 6.8 cents / mile

    edit: so it depends on the car

    TDI's are fuckin ROCK solid. I know PLENTY of mk3 TDI's well over 350K miles, and a bunch of mk4 TDI's over 200K already.

    I'm scared of VW's notorious electrical gremlins. But I still wouldn't mind a TDI. I wish they would bring over the AWD TDI Golf they have in Europe. :x:
