Did they make auto AWD turbo 1g and 2g DSMs?

Discussion in 'OT Driven' started by Tard Carnival, Sep 21, 2003.

  1. I'm thinking of possible project cars in a few years, and this thought crossed my mind.

I'm thinking auto for a few reasons:

-Stall converter would = great launches
-Auto drag racing is less hard on tranny (no clutch to drop)
-An auto is less likely to be modded to shit by the time I buy one.

    Well?

yes they make them, not alot of people have had great success with them. the trannys are pretty weak, even weaker than the manuals. you can build a manual tranny to take more abuse for 750-1000. you would easily spend that much on an automatic. the automatic 1g's also come with smaller turbos.

there an auto 1G TSi AWD and auto 2G TSi AWD in my front yard so i believe they did make them ;)

no clutch to burn out. shift kit will make it shift alot faster, you can boost on the line and you don't loose boost when shifting.

your reasoning is sound. but the autos are just real shitty. supra guys have alot of luck with auto's, but we still have to build them, or even use GM TH-400's to hold serious power. you are right though, the auto allows you to spool the turbo, and build boost while sitting still. although in a AWD car, even the manuals hit plenty hard, and if you use some technique, you wont break the transmission.

    and differnt cams also :)

the automatic's are horrible.. worse then the 5 speeds like someone else said.

  12. So basically I should avoid the auto anyway because it's so weak?

What would be its peak torque handling capabilities compared to a manual's?

5 speeds can make boost at the line also :)

  14., thanks.

The problem I'm afraid of is me utilizing not nearly enough self control and trashing my tranny in an attempt to get a little bit better 60' time.

  15. I'm bad at feathering the clutch, so if I were revving high enough to boost off the line, I'd probably have a shattered first gear or a few broken halfshafts. :o

Does anybody know why the 2g DSM turbo automatics were rated 5 hp less than the manuals? (205 vs 210 hp)

if you have enough power and get the wheels to spin on the line you should be ok, it's when you have the power and the wheels don't spin (no give) stuff starts to break.

only two of the top 100 fastest AWD's in the country are auto. and only 1 of the fastest DSM's in the world is auto.......and its a chevy powerglide.

  20. So basically as long as I kept tires on it that were decent but not drag slicks I wouldn't (necessarily) be breaking things?
