So I've seen quite a few people ask how accurate the calories burned amt on the cardio machines are...

Today I did the stairstepper for 40 mins and the total it gave was 407 cals burned.

Through past experiments I've done b/c of school I know my Hr vs. VO2 values which then using a few equations I can find cals burned.

From my data I found that I burned approx 348 cals...

My findings = stairstepper program under estimates calories burned.

I got bored and tried to look at your boobs while you talked.

But I did not see them, so I stopped reading.

    :sad2:

By the way, your conclusion makes no fucking sense.:ugh:

I agree, the text makes no sense.
I would not say that "all" stairmasters do the same thing though. Only that particular model...

wouldn't that sell more machines to over estimate calories burn?

    Is still close enough.

50 calories is neither here nor there.

you have to subtract your RMR for that 40 min to actually see how many cals your burned from doing that.

I dont see how you can measure it though, since there are alot of factors the machine cant possible know like your throid levels, how much lean mass you have etc.

Energy expenditure can be measured via VO2...I know what my VO2 levels are at certain heart rate levels from past physiology experiments I've done.

IMO, they are great for comparing workouts, but when it comes to actual value for personal caloric calculations, I pretty much ignore it. Then again, I dont' usually count calories, just keep a general mental picture.

There is no way a machine can be made to calculate accurate calorie count without giving you a full physical first. It will never happen. On average they're only 10-15% higher than actual calories burned.
