I finally decided to try box squats today (with a bench, not a legit box). When fully down, my knees were probably an inch higher than my hips, and my numbers were awful. I was struggling (with pretty awful form I might add :wtc: ) to get up 245x3, when normally I can do that with 315 to parallel. Are these just significantly harder because of the broken eccentric/concentric movements, or am I just being a bitch?

Also, the trainer there told me never to go below parallel on squats... is this really a common belief? :hsugh:

That trainer is an ignoramus. Full squats are hardcore and fun.

I worked in some absolute a2g close stance squats at the end of my squat workout. 315x6 crap that was tough. Hard on my knees too.

yes, box squats are harder then regular parrallel squats as long as you dont bounce off the box (which is a fuckign stupid thing to do)

yeah, i got down to probably an inch or 2 below parallel, and it was defenitely harder... what is the specific reason breaking the ecc/con cycle makes the lift more difficult?

werd... also forces you to use your hamstrings/glutes (which tend to be underdeveloped) more if you are doing it correctly.

When I started lifting for school sports in high school they were the only type we were allowed to do. Our school trainer emphasized proper form early.

I tried them yesterday for the first time, and I tried to keep my legs wide and knees out. My normal squat 1RM is 315, and with box squats, I did 135x8, 185x8, and 205x8 (really struggling on the last 2-3 reps). I definitely feel it in my ass and lower hips today though - I think I'll do them instead of normal squats from now on.

This article got me all pumped about them, too: http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle.do?article=body_120squat

me too I was surprised that they didn't seem that terribly more difficult than regular squats, but the next day I felt it in all the 'other' squat muscles besides my quads

one legged squats on a smith will kill ur glutes. support one of ur legs behind you on a bench, and try to have as big a stride. its like a super lunge
