First of all this happened once before, about five years ago, and my dad said he's had it happen 5-6 times in his life. Anyway earlier this morning I was sitting in my computer chair and as I turned my ankle caught on the leg and got pushed sideways. I felt shooting pain and stiffness in my knee (same knee as before) and I could not move it at all for about an hour. I got all sweaty and hot and was swearing up a storm ( :o ). Anyway it finally calmed down and bit and I was able to very carefully get around the house in my wheeled computer chair. It slowly got a little better as the day went on, then about a half hour ago I was able to stand up to pee. As I stood there my leg relaxed, extended and I felt a pop followed by a tingling sensation. After it subsided I found I could put some weight on it and it's been rapidly improving since then. When this happened before the doctor said it was a partially torn ACL and that over time it would heal itself. I've had some free time today so I've been doing some reading and I can't find an explanation for the pop that makes the pain go away. Any ideas?

Common causes of knee joint popping or cracking include a slight misalignment of the patella (knee cap), or the movement of the different ligament structures across the joint. When the ligaments move, it is often against the bones of the joint, which creates a slight stretching and then mild snapping back to their accustomed position.

Update: Had an MRI, there is a partial tear in the lateral meniscus. The doctor said that it will heal on it's own and absent any pain, I'm fine. That was about a week ago and I haven't had any pain whatsoever for about a week and a half now so I'm optimistic. I did some body weight squats today followed by just the bar and it felt great, just a little stiff. So yeah if anyone cares :o
