    I've been loving the flexibility of my Vostro 1400 the past few years, but I'm starting to get back into some video rendering and can't let the Core2 run for 24 hours. Need ideas.

    I've been reading up on how to build an i7 rig. I can afford it, but don't know if I can justify it if I'm only gonna flip it on when I'm rendering or editing. Anyone else do video encoding? What do you use?

    Right now I just have the laptop;

    Dell Vostro 1400
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    Intel C2D 1.6 G
    4 GB Memory
    320GB WD 7200 rpm HD
    Intel GMA 3100 =(

    i've done some encoding on my q9300 using handbrake but nothing serious. goes a lot faster than my previous x2 amd setup, but i did use the old one for some uncompressed avi->mpeg2 encoding to make some dvds of dance recitals. :dunno: if you aren't going to use it for much, maybe build a budget amd or core2quad box? you just have to weigh the price vs usage that you will get out of it vs what the software you are using supports. you could build a dual quad core xeon box that would render/encode video like a bat out of hell and will drain your wallet just as fast. you could build a really cheap core2duo box that will take 3-4x as long to encode the video but only cost 1/10th the price. you also need to consider the software you will be using. if the software isn't multi-threaded (and i can't imagine any recent video editing/encoding software that wouldn't be) then you might as well just get the cheapest chip you can with the fastest speed per core because multiple cores won't speed the process up at all.

    Thanks, this thread makes me feel less guilty about shelling out a grand for a second computer.

    The fun part was going from 3 year old P4 to this. It made life so much easier, getting jobs done quick and extra time for video games.

    It runs cool and fast. Overclock it with 6GB or 12GB ram and Intel SSD's and nothing can compare. I am still waiting for SSD's to drop in price before I get it.

    Every week I go through 7000-10000 Pictures and it makes it so easy.

    Wait till it stops scrolling down and no matter how much you clean it, it won't work as well. I went through 2 of them and gave up, then I bought a logitech MX Revolution mouse. Just as good, and some features that I like better.
