I'm a sports photographer who hates working in photoshop, but I do need a new business card.

Things I know I want for certain:

    1. Glossy front that looks similar to what I have posted. Layout can be different, but I do want multiple images on the front of the card, not just one.
    2. Black background with grey text.
    3. The back of the card will be matte with the actual info (name, website, email, phone, and perhaps a message like "contact me to let me know how I can solve your photographic needs" or something like that.
    4. I want white space left on the black of the card so people have room to write stuff.

If some of the above doesn't appeal to you, well, doesn't matter, it's my business card.

    Things not decided on:

    1. Font (I have lots)
    2. Exact image selection.
    3. Exact layout
    4. Where to get them printed (I'm not doing it myself because I want a lot, and finding medium weight paper that's glossy on the front and matte on the back does not sound like fun)

Anyway, right now it's just flat images on a flat back background with plain text in the middle. I've farted around with layer blending options but haven't found anything I like for the individual images (bevel, meh, stroke, meh). What do you all think about the layout on the front?

NOTE: ~ 50% of the outside border is supposed to be cut off during the printing process. I'd prefer to have the images run all the way to the edges of the card, but because I can not be certain where the cut will be, it's safer to have a border. Also, ignore the border on the top and left side, that's just me being lazy with trimming. It's not part of the card.

If anybody wants I can post the .psd file.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much stuff for one side of a business card.

pick one image & go from there. you're not trying to show off your photography skills - that's what your website is for.

i'd go on OSP or POTN and look at some of their business card threads. there are some great ideas there.

don't put more than one pic on one side of the card. it's not necessary.

The phrase, "Talking a lot without saying much" comes to mind. IMO it gives no justice to the quality of your photos because they're all going to be the size of M&Ms on the card itself. Perhaps just stick a vector image of a camera on there and find a good font. IMO good typography will always make a business card stand out - far more than imagery.

Not a logo. I haven't created one yet... I don't really see the need for one to be honest heh.

well ya its kinda obvious :o

but even your name in a more unique font/signature would be more aesthetically appealing

This is actually the first time I've ever read anything on POTN. My god it's like 90% of the people are idiots.

I will consider a more minimalist card with one image, but I'm not crazy about having to pick just one image. The "one image on the left, grey on black text on the right obeying the rule of thirds" cards seem so played out to me.

Just a little bit goes a long way, you don't need to have fifteen images to say what sort of work you do. If anything, put something on the card that leads to an online portfolio so people can really see your work.

... if you're up for paying for a logo or biz card design (worth it IMO)

That's the unfortunate thing about my initials. Anything with "SM" and "photography" on the same media doesn't always translate well. I wish I could do what some of my friends have done and abbreviate my website to "SMphoto.com" or "SMphotography" but I can't heh.

heh my intials are JW, which is how I ended up with jaydub as a nickname. JW doesn't go together very well either, which is why I ditched it altogether and went with something completely unrelated to my name.
