I'm making a shopping cart type site for an assignment.

I've started it by creating all the functionality (ie: PHP) first. I've done the registration, secure session/PWs, adminCP, userCP, HTML forms etc, but I've done no design work at all.

The majority of the other students in my class are doing their CSS layouts first, then adding the functionality afterwards.

Which do you think should be done first?

I design the layouts first (design only..photoshop/illustrator files), then code the functionality and the layout at the same time.

If i get bored making forms I switch over and work on flash/css, etc. :dunno:

I always though that "form follows function" meant that your design had to be functional at the least, powerful or easy to use at the most. Personally, I would figure out how the site would work and look and feel, then code in the functionality with the design as your guide. Lots of times you can ruin the UI because you didn't plan it out properly when you're coding the backend.

I'm starting to complete the site I'm making now :x:, and think this is the way forward.

HTML is the link between the php/sql and the CSS.

Is that why think so to?

yeah, somewhat. html is the simplest to complete. at least some of the PHP could require/benefit from the complete html. CSS is least necessary
