    Deputy dies following shooting

    Last Update: 9:48 pm

WICHITA, Kansas – Authorities say Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Brian S. Etheridge died after he was shot in the chest near South Rock Road Monday afternoon.

Officials are investigating the circumstances behind the shooting, but say the deputy was at a home in the area for a reported larceny when he was shot. Officials are now looking into the possibility that the deputy was set up and are interviewing witnesses.

The deputy was shot twice (once in the chest and once in the lower leg area) and taken in critical condition to a local hospital. It was hoped that he would survive, but died after surgery from his injuries.

Sheriff Bob Hinshaw says Etheridge was 26 years old, married and had been with the sheriff's department for just over a year.

The suspect is reportedly 27 years old and officers say he had recently been released on parole.

An area about one square-mile area was secured by hundreds of law officers as the suspect was believed to have been hiding in a residence or a field in that area.

Late Monday afternoon, the suspect was shot by law enforcement and taken to a local hospital in very critical condition and later died at the hospital.

from a earlier interview... it was believed that he was in a house, but popped out of a field near the house... where shooting between the suspect and the LEO's, resulted in the suspect getting shot... no other officer was reported hurt.

WICHITA, Kansas – New details are emerging about the man accused of killing a Sedgwick County deputy as officials continue to investigate the tragic incident.

The community is mourning the loss of Deputy Brian Etheridge. The 26 year old was shot Monday afternoon while investigating a larceny call on S. Rock Rd.

Etheridge leaves behind a wife and young daughter. He was a 2001 graduate from Derby High School and had been with the department for just over a year.

Now more is being learned about the man who allegedly killed him.

It is not the first time the shooting suspect, 27-year-old Richard Lyons, had assaulted police officers. He had a long, violent rap sheet that includes an arrest in 2005 for two counts of battery to a law enforcement officer.

Records obtained by KSN show a conviction from September 2003 when Lyons assaulted two officers responding to a call that he assaulted a woman with a hunting knife in March of that year. Lyons spent two years in Ellsworth after taking a plea deal in that case.

The documents also show a criminal history dating back to 1994 when Lyons was just 13 years old. It includes a count of battery from 1999 when he was 17, convictions of criminal threats and domestic battery from 2000 and ending with assault on a woman and two officers in 2003.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Bob Hinshaw said in a press conference Tuesday that Lyons was out of prison, but had served his time and was not under supervised parole.

WICHITA, Kansas – As authorities investigate the motive behind the deadly shooting of a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy, the sheriff is releasing more details about the events that led up to the murder Monday afternoon.

In a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Sheriff Bob Hinshaw told the media that Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Etheridge, 26, arrived at a home in the 3600 block of S. Rock Rd. to take a larceny report just before noon. When Etheridge didn’t get an answer at the door he called dispatch to see if they had a contact number. The sheriff says that when Etheridge walked around the outside of the house, Richard Lyons, 27, was hiding with weapons behind the home and opened fire.

Lyons fired a rifle at Etheridge, hitting him in the back and tried to fire it again, but the gun failed to discharge. It was then that Lyons grabbed Etheridge’s handgun and shot him a second time. Etheridge was wearing body armor; however, the rifle shot penetrated it. At some point he was able to radio to dispatch that he had been shot, but it is unknown if that was before or after the second shot.

Etheridge was responsive and speaking when he was taken to the hospital. He underwent surgery, but tragically died from his injuries. The sheriff does not know what Etheridge had told EMS.

Meanwhile, authorities secured the area around the crime scene. It was thought Lyons was hiding inside the residence, but in fact had been hiding in the field the entire time.

At around 5:15 p.m. a humvee, loaned by McConnell Air Force Base and operated by agents with the ATF and KHP, was circulating the area. One of the officers thought they saw an individual lying in a tree row. It was then Lyons got up and began running. He took shots at the humvee and officers began a foot pursuit. Lyons fired more shots at the officers and they returned fire, hitting Lyons. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but the sheriff was not sure how many and which officers may have hit him.

Sheriff Hinshaw says it is unknown how many shots were fired in the exchange between Lyons and officers. Investigators are still on scene collecting shell casings.

Lyons was taken into custody and transported to Wesley Medical Center in very critical condition. EMS said he was not expected to live. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Sheriff Hinshaw says there is so far no proof that a larceny ever existed in the case. The motive for the murder is still under investigation and officials are still interviewing Lyons’ family members.

The case is being investigated by the Wichita Police Department, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department and ATF.

When the investigation is complete, it will be handed over to the district attorney for further review.

Deputy Brian Etheridge leaves behind a wife and young daughter.

KSN will publish funeral arrangements as soon as they are announced.
