I've always had to be on the 3 day delay for purchases, but I've never been denied until yesterday. Academy said I had been denied the purchase of a S&W 15-22 (no opinions please).

Just a couple of months ago I purchased a FNAR from a local gun shop with no problems (except the 3 day delay).

Earlier in the year I purchased a handgun from another shop (same delay)

WTF is going on that now I am being denied. One thing is the Academy guy had me line out and initial the form in several places where in the other stores they would have me start over if I made a mistake.

I'm just going to blame Academy. I went to another shop and filled out paperwork for the same rifle ($50 cheaper anyway). I also emailed the NICS website requesting the reason for my denial.

Anyone have any experience with something like this?

  2. Have you done anything that would cause you to be denied?

No, there are reasons for the delay, but nothing has changed with my legal standing with the exception of a speeding ticket (which I paid)

Common surname etc? You could very well have the same name as someone who cannot legally own firearms.

How would NICS know if you had scribbled on the form when Academy called it in?

I don't know. How would they know if I abbreviated my birthplace state instead of spelling it out? That's also not allowed.

Isn't there some sort of card or paperwork you can get that basically says, this guy is not a criminal and it prevents the 3 day wait shit?

Do you have a brother, cousin, etc. that recently committed a crime? I have a friend who's brother somehow shows up when they call it in because their socials are similar or some shit.

I'm just saying your scribbling had nothing to do with being denied. Its only a problem for the FFL in their next audit.

my guess is that the FFL didn't give them the correct SSN (or my question which MG answered was if you put the optional SSN on the form). Unless you've done something that would cause you to be denied, that's probably the only reason. I'd have them run it again.

It's called a CHL, at least in Texas.

Got the letter from the FBI concerning my inquiry into why I was denied the purchase of the gun from Academy. The letter stated that they didn't deny the firearm transfer then explained the Voluntary Appeal File program and how it would prevent erroneous denials or delays. Not interested in that. The delays aren't a problem, denials are.

I guess since they didn't get back to Academy in the 3 day period, Academy just decided to tell me that I was denied.

Anyway, I pick up the same gun from a local dealer tomorrow morning.

If they don't get back to the FFL holder in the 3 day period the firearm is your's.

The dealer "may" sell you the gun. Academy's policy is not to sell until they get an answer.

You should just not bring your business to Academy anymore for saying you were denied. Let them know why so maybe they will just say they didn't get a response in the future instead of making you freak out by telling you you are denied.
