Report: Demian Maia agrees to face Chael Sonnen at UFC 95 in London

Undefeated UFC middleweight Demian Maia (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has agreed to face former WEC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen (21-9-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at UFC 95 according to a report on Maia's official website.

UFC 95 is scheduled for Feb. 21 at the 02 Arena in London.

To date, the UFC has only released the evening's main event bout of Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson, though other rumored bouts have been confirmed by the combatants involved.

The bout will mark Maia's first action since a first-round submission win over Nate Quarry at UFC 91 in November. Since debuting for the organization in October 2007, the 31-year-old Brazilian has won all four of his UFC bouts via submission.

Chonnen had a three-fight stint with the UFC in 2006, but the 31-year-old left the organization after a submission loss to Jeremy Horn at UFC 60. Sonnen has compiled a 7-1 record for the WEC, BodogFIGHT and SportFight since his departure from the UFC.

Sonnen last fought in a November bout at "WEC 36: Faber vs. Brown" with Paulo Filho. Sonnen earned a unanimous decision victory over the WEC middleweight champion, but the bout was considered a non-title affair after Filho failed to make the 185-pound weight limit.

Initial attempts by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) to reach Sonnen and confirm his participation were unsuccessful.

With the addition of Maia vs. Sonnen, the rumored fight card now includes:
    • Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson
    • Wilson Gouveia vs. Nate Marquardt
    • Demian Maia vs. Chael Sonnen
    • Justin Buchholz vs. Terry Etim
    • Shannon Gugerty vs. Tom Lawson
    • Stefan Struve vs. Junior dos Santos
    • Neil Grove vs. TBA

on top of that, i'm sure they'll start loading the card with more british fighters, and because of the limited pool of even mediocre caliber brit fighters, it's gonna be that much more of a letdown on paper

Excited for this fight, and on paper seems like Sonnen has the style to grind out a win over a good BJJ player, but i said that about Quarry as well.

On paper it looks like he gets tapped everytime he faces a good BJJ player.

    Maia all day long.

The champ came in overweight and lost... he should forfeit a percentage of the purse for being over weight AND lose the title for losing the fight. That's some retarded WWF shit there

Doesn't mean anything. Paulo didn't come looking top 10 at all. Sonnen needs a bit more fights to get solidified in the division.

I think Sonnen is established enough already, he should be up there in title contention

If he beats Maia then he'll probably need just 1 or maybe 2 more quality wins to earn a title shot.

But he has no chance in hell against Maia. So we don't really have to worry about it.

These fights are all underwhelming enough to be ridiculously entertaining.

Top 3 fights on the list will be extremely entertaining. Not underwhelming at all IMO.

Actually, if this event had a real main event then I'd say it would probably end up being the best card of the year.

after the sonnen paulo fight I became a sonnen fan. Not so much because of his talent but because of the fact that he beat the crap out of paulo filho whom I hate.
