trying to get something for PE. doesn't have to be crazy fast, just reliable with decent battery life and somewhere under $800 with a decent warranty.

the 1500 looked fairly decent. :dunno:

Dell laptops are cheap pieces of shit. All plastic, monitor and motherboard support the case, no frame, etc.

Get something from lenovo if you're just after a general purpose laptop. Things are built to last.

If she does any gaming or anything, though, get a clevo rebrand. Sager, etc, take Clevo laptops and rebrand them - Alienware uses them as well, but you can get them much cheaper from sager, or even a sager reseller such as pctorque

Dell business laptops (the Latitudes) are in another league compared to the ones for individuals

No idea about Vostro though because it's new, but go to try out their demos since they usually have them in malls anyway

The Vostros have a magnesium frame. Not as cheap as previous Dells.

But the Lenovo suggestion is probably best.

err... the Inspiron and Vostros line both have Magnesium Alloy Frames. They are built quite strong, the latitude/XPS use the same frame as the 17" Vostros.

That proves how fucking shitty the vostro is. Those laptops are always getting brought in with busted hinges. Fuck that. I DARE you to break a Thinkpad hinge -- you cant.

As long as you don't use your laptop as a boomerang, you won't have an issue with the hinges. At least if you're not a moron.

However, owning both a Thinkpad X60 and Dell Inspiron, I must say that the Thinkpad is built much better. The X60 could probably survive a nuclear war. But, that being said, Dell laptops are much cheaper (and it's obvious by the build quality), but if you take care of them for the most part they will last as long as you need them to.

Dells really are not much cheaper. they are a little cheaper, but not by much...

Dell sells some SHITTY configs that are dirt-cheap.... As where all ThinkPad configs are good. If you compare similar specs, the ThinkPad pricing is competitive. Furthermore, Dells have been shown to underperform given specific specs... So systems that are "comprable" on paper will general net better performance with the ThinkPad, anyway, in addition to superior durability.

it's flash memory built into the notebook that can be used to facilitate ready-boost and similar functions. "robson" is the name, iirc.

Uh, no. I worked on latitudes day in and day out at one of my old jobs. Probably 2000 issued throughout, and we were having to repair them constantly. 50+ parts being shipped in from dell, every day. Eventually my boss realized "Hey, you're paid to be a sysadmin, not swap out hard drives and LCDs and motherboards. I guess I should hire some technicians", but my job was hell up until that point.

Latitudes are STILL plastic case no frame pieces of shit.

I just read the rest of the thread - Don't even get me started on hinges. Those things got broken just opening and closing the damn laptops.

Do they really? Well, that's something. I can vouch for a metal skeleton being worth the extra money; the laptop I'm typing this post on was built in 1999, and has traveled (in checked baggage) to London and Tokyo and Los Angeles, not to mention it has ridden in the trunk of my car for three years' worth of trips to and from college.

It's a Gateway Solo and it has a steel skeleton. Magnesium would do just as well, considering most of the components inside wouldn't withstand the forces that would break a magnesium skeleton anyway, and it would be a hell of a lot lighter.

I once saw a Thinkpad with a loose hinge. I tightened the screws and all was well. Can't count the number of Dells that had to have the hinges outright replaced.

Wtf? Keleko got killed in a motorbike accident? Man. :(
