    Opinions, thoughts. comments?

We are looking to move, post your best info on police departments, municipal EMS (non-fire department please...)

Opinions on best ranges in both areas, night life in/near, and suburbs that you would move to.

    :)

There's more to do in Dekalb if you like the city, but Columbia is a great, quieter area.

    Depends on what you like.

DeKalb. Listen to me. If you're white, and I know you two are, you do NOT want to live in Columbia. If you're firearm owners, and I know you two are, you do NOT want to pick SC over GA. Also, I know that DeKalb has a good EMS service, and there are several good private and county services around here. Some are integrated, some are not. If you're looking to get into LE and being a tacmedic, DeKalb and its neighbor, Gwinnett (where I live) are the place to be. Atlanta has shitloads more things to do, places to go, it's warmer, and the sweet tea is better. Also, you'll be close to me, you douchebags.

Kennesaw is way the fuck out there, though. They want to move to a place where there's actually something nearby. Besides cows.

Oh, the nice thing about moving down here is that you'll get to use my best friend's range and store once it's done this summer.

it takes 20 min to get to atlanta, its far from being out there. your thinking of stuff way out past cartersville. Cobb has the best schools in the state and is very developed.

Yeah, but Cobb is still Cobb. If you're going for Dekalb, aim for the Lakeside area. It's the nicest part of Dekalb, with the better schools. Better yet, move to the north part of Gwinnett.

As I told your woman on the phone today, Gwinnett would be the better PD to get on with, especially if you're trying to get in with a badass SWAT team. The Gwinnett SWAT team has placed in the top 10 at the international SWAT Roundup in Orlando 4 out of the past 5 years. The only time they didn't was because they didn't go in 2001 after the WTC attacks. They placed 5th twice and 8th twice. And this is against SWAT teams like LAPD, GSG9, etc. These teams they're competing against are dedicated SWAT teams. All they do is train and run SWAT calls. In Gwinnett, every SWAT team member is a regular uniformed officer. They have regular shifts up until the point when they train or they get called from regular duties to run SWAT calls. That's pretty damn impressive to rank up there that high when it's not even a full-time team.

Also, there's a couple houses for sale in my neighborhood.

This is the THE one. It's the one I was looking for when I started this hunt through realestate.com. If this house had been for sale when we moved into this neighborhood, I'd have forced my parents to buy it. I'm sure you could get some of the price down, but it has what you're looking for and more. Nice neighborhood, in ground pool (with a slide, no less), a nice yard (it needs some weeding at the moment, but that only helps your negotiations), and it's about 500 yards down the neighborhood from me. It's a badass looking house, too. I wish the picture was better, and from the other side. The house, exteriorly, is in great shape. I'm sure the interior is pretty good too, especially if they want to sell it. It's got room to grow with the 4 br, 3.5 baths. The address is actually on Casa Loma Dr., not on Cole Dr., like the map says. I meant to stop by there and get a flyer on my way in tonight, but I'm lazy.

I've found that the link I posted doesn't actually work.

Anyways, Buford and Sugar Hill and Suwanee are the three cities I'd aim for. Apply to both Gwinnett and Dekalb PD's. Dekalb pays more. Gwinnett is the worst in the ATL area for pay (except the city of Atlanta), but benefits are better than Dekalb. So, you just have to get in there and work on retirement. You might be able to get on with one of the city departments as well, or become a sheriff's deputy. In Gwinnett, we have a police department, a sheriff's department, and city departments. The city and county PD's have the same duties, but the county PD usually doesn't enforce within city limits. The sheriff's department handles warrants, the jail and court system, prisoner-type stuff, and other court paper-type things. They don't do much in the way of actual enforcement of normal laws unless you really piss them off.

Some of the local municipal PD's won't hire you unless you've already got your GA POST certification, because they don't have their own police academy, and they won't pay to send you to one. Others will send you to one. Most, if not all, of the counties have their own academies.

Not true at all. GA's laws are better than NV or TX, by far. There are basically no regulations on top of the US laws, except you have to undergo an instant GA background check in addition to the national one. No waiting periods, no nothing. Shall issue state. No classes required in order to get a carry permit. No restrictions on what firearms may be owned, no restrictions on NFA firearms. Once you get outside the Atlanta city limits, most CLEO's will sign on just about anything. If you have a corporation, that doesn't matter anyways, but still...The only state that really beats GA's firearm laws is FL, because you can carry in restaurants and on college campuses you attend. Here, you can't do either, but the restaurant thing will change next year hopefully. Of course, for Kellyclan, he's aiming for LE, which will negate that whole restriction on carry everywhere. He'd be able to carry nationwide.

The cost of living here is also very good. I know cost of living is low in Vegas, but in comparison, the jobs available to these two in the fields they're aiming for aren't as available or as well compensated as here.

Also, while Montana may seem appealing based on its laws, the weather sucks, and the people sucks. The state is filled with liberals despite the apparent right-leaning laws. It's only a matter of time before they swing left. GA, however is swinging the right way more and more. The weather here is good almost year round compared to up north. Our gas prices are among the lowest in the nation all the time. Our taxes aren't TOO bad. FL has no income tax, but they get you with property taxes and toll roads. GA is home to the fair tax bill, and every single GA delegate to the US congress had signed on for it up until the last election. I'm not sure where they all stand now.

The areas you're looking at in Gwinnett County are right up there by Lake Lanier. It's a 38,000 acre lake at the north end of Gwinnett, and really, up into Hall county. It has its own resort, beach, and water park, called Lake Lanier Islands. I think that takes care of your water requirements. You're not too far from the mountains if you ever want to get up that way, and you're about an 8 hour drive from Orlando or Daytona. A little less for Destin, PC, and such. The Buford area is where my best friend is looking at putting his indoor range/store. There's also three major malls in Gwinnett. You have Gwinnett Place Mall, Discover Mills, and The Mall of Georgia, which is absolutely huge.

All in all you'll do good if you move to Gwinnett, and you'll do better if you're in the northern part of Gwinnett. If Kim ends up working for Grady EMS, she'll be driving into town, towards the west side. It'll be a good 30-45 minute drive in light traffic from northern Gwinnett. In rush hour, it'll be hell. You won't be in rush hour, though, because shift changes will be before and after rush hours. Sort of. Call me if you want to know what traffic is like in the Atlanta area.

Yeah thanks, bail out of this State and further tilt the ratio of liberals to conservatives.

PS, I traded your RRA lower for a Preban Oly. ;)

No one in EMS wants to work in a place where they have to worry about getting shot, because we're limited to NOT shooting at people. We can't carry, and it wouldn't be safe to do so because of our duties. We're supposed to be saving people, not worrying about being shot. And while drunk people might keep you busy, it gets old, really, REALLY fast.

One of the two wants to get into LE, the other one is staying in EMS. They're both in EMS right now. There are some awesome opportunities around here for both of them. The houses here are cheap. The schools here are good. Living near Sin City might be fine and dandy for a young, party-type person, but for families, it's not so much a priority. Plus, there's the Indian casinos around here, so we can gamble if it's really a big deal. And, we don't have to be surrounded by a freaking desert.

I heard Las Vegas was great for my line o' work, but there's no damn H20 for sailing. :(
Alas, must move someplace with at least a big lake or two for the dinghy racing...

No, there's a huge fucking lake near LV. But you're still too close to California in LV. I've lived in the south all my life. Notice I still do. She's lived here before, too.
