At a minimum, you should really backup to a separate machine so that if the worst happened, you can recover from that backup. Ideally, you'd have at least some kind of RAID (redundancy for disk failure) as well as a backup. Somethign like R1 soft's Continuous Data Protection is good because it is an incremental backup solution, so that only the data that has changed is sent over. This reduces the total load caused by taking backups, and should also be cheaper.

We use ZFS as a file system, so that's just beautfiul for taking backups with the in-built snapshot facility. :big grin:

im more worried about a harddrive failure taking out everything. an extra hd is only $5 extra a month so thats looking like a good way to go. is there a service that many people use for stuff like this?

I got RAID5 arrays on all my boxes, and an extra SATA for daily rsyncs.

I signed up for an account with hostgator (what, $12/mo?) and use cPanel's FTP backup and connect to that server for daily backups. Then once a week I use an FTP program to bring down a copy of everything to my local machine.

    Cheap and easy.

until they catch you. its against their TOS. you can probably get away with it if you have a small website but transferring gigs worth of data for example would probably raise flags

might as well go with what i said and do it legit so you dont have worries and rsync eases bandwidth consumption if youre transferring a lot of data

Well, crap, I didn't know that. My other server is a Hostgator dedicated server, so perhaps that will buy me some clout. I don't have much data anyway, just a few hundred MB.

Oh well, we'll see what happens. :dunno:

I do a mysqldump daily and scp it to a remote machine. Once a week I tar the files and do the same. I exclude the public upload folder and galleries ...
