Well im finally in a position where I will be able to afford to purchase a firearm. I am torn on two guns.

    NEW Hi-Point 9mm carbine

USED Mossberg 500 Hunting Sport (or Special? I forget??)

Im a skinny guy, 6' 2" - 170lbs soaking wet, would the 12 guage be too much to start off with? I want to get something I will be able to shoot and get comfortable with, mostly just for target practice and such. Will shooting a 12 guage for half a day wear me out, or should I be alright? I figure the 9mm probably has less kick to it. But the Mossberg just feels so damn smooth. Its used, but in great condition. Both guns are $199...

Go with Mossberg for the name? Or go with the 9mm because I will be able to get more use from it? I like the idea of the 9mm because the ammo is interchangable if I decide to also pickup a handgun. Buy both? And handgun? :noes:

    How do I decide? :sadwavey:

no comparison between a 12ga and a 9mm recoil. If its your first gun, go for the 995 carbine and you can shoot all day without a problem. The Mossberg will let you know you were shooting it at the end of an hour. :)

See im just not sure if im ACTUALLY going to use it that much. I dont think I will be doing like 300 rounds an hour, but just getting the basics down... etc. My only concern with going the 9mm is the break down, I hear its a bitch. And frankly when I need 3 hands to do something I get annoyed. I dont want to break it down to clean it, and end up having to bring it to the shop to have em show me how to get it all to go back together. :wiggle:

For $200 you could buy a standard Ruger 10/22, plinker scope and rings. EXCELLENT first rifle, plenty accurate, and cheap to feed. It's got your other two ideas completely beat.

Well im also looking to use it for protection, I go camping out in the middle of no where, a stones throw from canada. There are several large animals up there from time to time... and should I come across one, I dont think a 22 is going to offer me anything more then me throwing rocks ;)

9mm really won't do much to any wildlife that would threaten your life anyway. :dunno:

i'd go with whatever you'll use more. Will you plink at the range more or tote it around camping more often?

$199 is WAY too much for a used Mossberg 500. I bought mine brand new for $199 on sale.

    Look at other gun stores.

You were doing ok up until you posted the link to the extreme crap ammunition.
If there is anything you learn about guns, its that that stuff is junk.

You are better off with the Mossberg.
