so we got approved for our bonus yesterday... which means 1/2(well a little more than 1/2) of it goes towards supplies for our new house, and the other 1/2 goes towards gear. My biggest dilema is what to buy. I'll have about 2k to spend.... I'm thinking about a 40D, and a 17-55 (or more than likely the tamron counterpart so I can use it on my 10D as well) But, the more I think about it, I don't need live view, and I don't need 6.5 fps, and I the extra 1.9mp isn't enough to sway me. So i can pick up a used 20d for $500(avg) basically same camera, minus the things listed and a smaller LCD and be able to buy another lens, plus some lighting equipment (thinking of the Elinchrom 800 w/s D-Lite 4 Kit while it's on sale @ MPEX)

    so.. what does OTAP think?

Shoot a 40D & 20D and see if you notice the difference. I'm willing to bet that other things like noise and color production is better in the 40D over the 20D. Which *maybe* enough for you to justify the 40D.

But I shoot Nikon so I have no experience with either.

some reviews I've read said that that's not the case.... I've heard it both ways though.... one review talked about since the sensor is a little smaller + more mp it creates a greater risk for noisier images... I've shot a 30D (exact same sensor as the 20D) at 1600 ISO and the noise was tolerable, a lot better than my 10D that's for sure.

    Used 30D: 500-700
    Tamron 17-50 f2.8: 300-500 used/new
    2 Vivitar 285HV + 3 PWs = 800

Depending on what you find and how much you pay this may leave enough for umbrellas and stands.

I have 1 vivitar now, a sb24, a sigma 500 super dg and a 430ex.... I'm thinking about the d-lites for more power and a faster recycle time.

I also have 2 lightstands and 2 46" shoot thru umbrellas.

I finally figured out a good use for the live-view... was shooting the Phoenix Open couple weeks ago, and at 200mm + and live view, i can shoot during golfer's backswings without making too much noise. The shutter is pretty quiet when the mirror isn't slapping around
