for all purpose go with the 18-200VR. you will need the VR because both the 18-70 and 18-200 are slow lenses.

what are the disadvantages of being "slow"?

and if i can get the 18-200 for less than 600 should i pull the trigger?

    would a 50mm f1.8 be a good lens?

I will be going to hawaii in a month.

they do not let in enough light for shooting in marginal lighting conditions. "slow" is reference to the aperture, a fast lens would be a 1.4 or 1.8.

Slow shutter speeds. Not as much creative choice in depth of field.

    yes.

The disadvantages of being slow is that when you use the both lenses at their longest zoom, the aperature of the lens increases (f/4.5 on the 18-70 and f/5.6). When this happends two things happen. One-the shutter speed slows wayy down. If you're shooting soccer at night you'll get blurry players with sharp glass. Secondly, the depth of field gets much larger. Suddenly you can see those tree's behind the bird instead of them being out of focus.

If you are going to hawaii in a month a 50mm lens would probably not be my first choice, unless you aren't going to take any landscape pictures. You need a wide lens to get in all the scenery.

Lastly, if you find a 18-200 VR online for less than 600 dollars its either a scam or stolen. They are more than that BRAND NEW. Unless you're buying it from your best friend I wouldn't even consider it.

As for which lens to get first...My first was the 18-70 was a good first lens. It's cheap and very good. The best part about it is that it showed me what the second lens I was going to be buying was. Wanna know how? Use it for a few months and then figure out what focal length you use the most is. Wide? Portrait? Zoom? Once you REALLY figure out what focal length you love to use, then you can pull out the big bucks for a lens you'll fully utalize.

    Good luck.

Soccer at night? Want good results?

    70-200 f/2.8 VR
    200 F/2 VR
    300 f/2.8

the cheapest being the 70-200 VR @1700 bucks.

If you're "getting it at cost" (do you mean employee pricing?) you will be waiting for a long time. Supply and Demand is why someone would pay 900 for it and why they go for over 1000 on ebay.

He's spot on for soccer at night.

Neither the 18-200 nor the 18-70 are going to help you.

Sports in the dark could be one of the hardest things to photograph without spending $5k.

As far as normal photography, both the 18-70 and 18-200 are good lenses. The edge would have to go to the 18-200 because it's VR, and I hear it manages to shoot it's full range with almost no distortion, which boggles my mind....

An 18-200 and a 50mm 1.8 would be a great set of lenses.

The employee pricing program is different from the one I am getting it from. I doubt there's a wait.
