i am going to be colocating my server here shortly, moving it out my work closet (up time reasons). i just want to get something cheap that will do the job. i don't plan on having this for a ton of traffic, just basic protection until i can afford something bigger. used, whatever, i could care less.

or would a software firewall even be fine as long as i move to firewall before i get heavy traffic?

    1U preferably :hs:

most datacenters have decent routing, so a software firewall is typically sufficient.

If you want something great for hardware, then I highly recommend a cisco pix.

You can find a used pix 501 on ebay for fairly cheap.

Seconded, the 501 is surprisingly powerful for it's price and size.

do you have to pay for the license on a Cisco Pix?
Or just buy the box and it works forever?

And to add to the topic, have you thought about a 1U server runing *Nix as a firewall?
