I'm going to buy an XTi but I'm going to skip on the kit and just get the body, and another lens, but does anyone have any good recommendations for a lens to get? I'm new to using SLR cameras

I got the 28-135 IS USM, i love it, good range, but I wish i would have got the 17-85 IS USM at the same time.
I did also get the 50mm f/1.8, at only like $70 or $80 it is a VERY good value.

I wont make a new thread for this but i have an XTi as well and I have the kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8, and Ive found locally a guy with a CANON EF 28-105MM 3.5-4.5 USM that I could have for $100.

Is that an ok price or should I just pass and save for something better?

if you're new and want a good lens that is cheap

I love how people are just throwing out random lens suggestions without asking what the OP is going to shoot and what his lens budget is.

That's some quality advice, OTAP. :ugh2:

Lenses are soo fucking played out. Why even buy if you don't even know how the glass, metal and plastic work at the atomic level.

    Ohio st. huh? :hsugh:

when I bought my xti I was recommended a sigma 28-200mm. For my amature status it's served me well.

for all-around shooting, I bought a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 ... i really like it compared to the kit lens.
