Thickness of back was lacking so I started really focusing on deads and rack pulls to help that out. Now, my back has some thickness to it (more-so than before) but my waist looks thicker and obliques are larger which is messing up my V-taper.

Anyone else have this problem? What did you do about it?

I want a thick back but I don't want my v-taper all jacked up since I want to do a show sometime in the next year.

    Ideas?

Work your lats until you look like a flying squirrel.

my lats have really been growing great lately, i just focus on really good form + go heavy on deads, then lat pulldowns, seated rows, db rows, and pullups.

do you do direct oblique work?
have you gained weight? if so could it be just that you've gotten fatter?

The thickness of my waist (fat aside) has barely changed since I started lifting :dunno:

    Might be an individual thing.

My obliques have gotten so fucking big. I don't even know what happened.
It doesn't help that my delts suck, I just look like a little block.

i do pullups to burn out after everything at the end with my bodyweight. i feel they both serve their purpose.

hmm interesting. So why not do weighted pull ups at the beginning to pre-exhaust everything?

Thats what I do...pullups are a good warmup for the entire back too.

EDIT: I meant pullups not pulldowns.

To answer some of the questions:

No, it's not just in my head. I have been working out long enough to know when my mid-section is looking thicker.

No, it is not just fat. I am actually leaning down right now.

No, I do absolutely no direct oblique work; for this very reason.

Yes, maybe I should just shut up and work on getting lats. I have a huge problem getting my lats to grow though :(

Pic from a few weeks ago for reference: As you can tell, my obliques are not really noticeable, but but my waist and mid-frame are getting wider :squint:

has your weight gone up? I know your your subcutaneous fat may not have increased, but that doesn't mean you're not holding more visceral fat.

I don't weight myself often, but no, weight has not made any significant movement in either direction yet.

lol so many pros/cons to DLing heavy...awesome lift, hits the upper body hard, but too much of it will leave you looking like a brick

maybe doing deads once every 2 weeks or once every month will be safer bro?
