strength off the floor would be more lower back, hammies, etc.. then quads depending on how you pull.. strength at the top would be a mix of upper back/glutes

Well thats what I thought too, but when I asked Louie @ Westside this weekend that exact question he told me upperback. Wendler said close stance quad work.

i think it depends entirely on how you pull and regardless of what louie said the first part of the back to come into play during a DL would be the low back.. kind of common sense. louie is a pioneer but also has a HUGE history of in person mis quoting and mis saying. this dates back 15+ years... maybe thats the case here.

if you pull with your hips high then your quads are not taken into account much. if you start the pull like a squat then yes quads are extremely important. it all depends.

yeah I wasnt gonna argue with him. I was a guest at his gym. The only way upper back makes sense to me is that it has to be strong enough to isometrically support the load even initially or when you start the pull the upper back will just keep lowering down as you rise and the bar doesnt go anywhere. But this is conjecture on my part. I completely argee tho that lower back and quad strength is definetly important for the start again depending on how you pull.

lower back. good mornings, deficit pulls, anything lower back intensive. the mark of a great deadlifter is how strong his lower back is.. at least at the highest levels. if you watch, most top deadlifters (conventional) are all hips high pullers. i think some people just have genetically beastly lower backs. i mean bolton said he pulled 600 his first try ever deadlifting, LOL

i try my best but it doesn't feel right to try and force my hips super low. I'm pretty tall, dunno if that has anything to do with it, but it feels fuckin awkward and shitty kinda..hard for me to get into the right position

bah i hate utilizing my lower back anymore for any movement. how high would u recommend for deficit pulls and for GM's i'm assuming they're suspended (or resting on pins)?
