Would they be? Able to withstand a splash. I am most worried about the phase plug and PE is out ot of the HI VI magnesium cones and wont have any in untill late november.

I am possibly building some uber tower speakers.

    Then why are you worried.

You're not putting the towers in your boat...

And... you don't have any friends... and ASK HOW TO THROW PARTIES on the internets. So we know you fail at that (nospillingdrinkonthem)

    So....

    Damn lol.

Why the fuck should a Hi-Fi driver need to be water resistant? They aren't exposed to water...

And besides, they're aluminum cones, so they won't rot.

Just a guess here, so don't take it personal.

It seems like you might not know much about speaker building.

So before you go to build the uber towers, you might want to run everything by the people in here.

I still don't see a situation where any liquid would ever be splashed onto a hi-fi speaker. Maybe pro audio if you put your drink on the cabinet, but those type of speakers are built like God's sphincter, so they don't even feel it.

Yes, asking if I'd have to be worried about water getting in a phase plug of an aluminum coned driver means I dont know how to build speakers.

    Don't :hsugh: me.

The only part of your paragraph that I could even understand was the last sentence where you mentioned wanting to build uber towers.

"Would they be? Able to withstand a splash. I am most worried about the phase plug and PE is out ot of the HI VI magnesium cones and wont have any in untill late november. "

Maybe if you had said that in plain English, I would have realized a brilliant speaker builder was behind the text.

:ugh: You already said they weren't for marine, so what's your point?

I didnt say they werent for marine. I was asking if getting a splash of water on the front of the cone could damage the speaker because water would get around the gap of the phase plug.

I am building a set of tower speakers for the boat. Not Hifi, PA, PA drivers in the price range of the Dayton's have paper cones and absolutely no low end. I plan on using 4 drivers in the 6-8'; range and two PA horns or super tweeters. They will be mounted in a sealed fiberglass enclosure on top of the tower. The mids will get 50-60w each and the supertweeters/horns a little less (being that they are 8ohm)

I wasnt asking for anyone to analyze my project, I was asking if water in the phase plug of the daytons would be a bad thing. There are ''marine ready'' speakers that have a phase plug but it is plastic (kicker KS series componets). I am most worried about the phase plug eventually rusting and locking up the driver.

You do realize you could have saved a week by asking if the RS series is suitable for marine purposes....

Nah, you could have saved a week by just answearing the question at hand.

Oh well. I am probably going to go with true PA drivers. Eminence 8's with threaded back plates to screw supertweeters in to.

I can see why it's a drag to type all that up to get a straight answer, but in the end you save time.

But even if it is aluminum, it's going to be coated with clear coat.
If you're worried about the seal around the edge of the phase plug where it meets the cone, you could put a very thin layer of some sealer in there. I'd imagine some clear acrylic nail polish would do the trick without adding any appreciable weight to the cone mass.

The RS is not a marine speaker. I don't know how you would get water splashing onto the speaker, but I know of no transducers that are made to withstand that either. If you're going in freshwater, they should be fine. If salt water, get some actual marine speaker components.

Marine ready in the manual with the plastic screw on phase plug.

I still don't see why you're possibly worried about them getting wet if you are building these "uber towers". You can't put tower speakers on a boat anyway. And even if you did, they would be inside somewhere which means they wouldn't get wet.
