You are going in the wrong direction man. 155 at 5'8" is still pretty damn skinny. If I were you, I'd start lifting and enjoy the noob gains.

    - because I don't need muscles right now, I just want to lose fat because i'm growing some love handles. i guess the only muscles im working on is my abdominal area because thats where the gut is at. as queer as this sounds i feel fat in my business suit.
    - my diet: breakfast: oatmeal, water / lunch: tuna sandwich or white meat sandwich with mustard, lettuce, and water / dinner: steam brocolli, tuna, white bread, or cheese & crackers, and water
    - how much water: about 4-6 bottles per day
    - age: 22 years old

You cant spot reduce fat. Get in the gym. You're not going to get huge on accident.

For losing weight, lifting is going to help you a whole lot more than cardio ever will.

whats your point? lifting weights is the easiest way to drop fat.

In addition, if this motherfucker is 5'8" 155 and still thinks he's fat, he either is (1) anorexic, or (2) has so little muscle mass that he'll always look fat, regardless of his weight. Either way, he needs to hit the gym and lift to shed the fat and at least strengthen whatever muscle he does have.

how about you shut the fuck up and attack my arguments and not me? or are you too stupid to do that?

    Back for new years, huh?

I'm not disagreeing with weight lifting being very effective at cutting fat, but in my experience, cardio beats it.

If I were him I'd be eating 3500kcal/day and lifting my ass off, then bulking after I started to look really fat. The problem is, he wants to lose fat.

i'm back after extensive sinus/nose surgery and a painful recovery, but thanks. i originally left because a lot of people on F&N got bleeding vaginas for a while, and it gayed up the whole forum to the detriment of everyone involved.

as discussed on this forum many times before, lifting heavy increases basal metabolic rate more or less equivalently to cardio, but keeps it raised for a much much longer period - like maybe 30 min to an hour for cardio, but 24-48 hours for lifting. in addition, lifting helps maintain muscle mass and strength while cutting, whereas cardio will not.

so, if you want to cut fat and spare muscle, the best way to go about it is by lifting heavy for low reps while sticking to a good carb-timing diet (like this one: http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=2287506). i'm not saying cardio is bad, because it has its place; 30 min of moderate-intensity cardio after lifting will definitely help. I'm just saying, if you want to compare the two side by side, or if you are only going to do one (as the threadstarter is doing right now), heavy lifting is hands-down the better of the two.

Lifting heavy is going to do him much more good than cardio will at this point. Lifting weights burns a hell of a lot more calories than cardio does and adds the benfit of helping retain muscle mass while cutting. Of course cardio has its place in cutting, but if you had to do only one, lifting weights is the way to go. And yes, I've cut before.
