Right now, im driving a 90 mustang GT.. love the car but it got broken into many times. Im thinking of picking up a 70s Datsun Z and swapping a LT1 or LS1 into it. Pros and cons? Is it easy to do and how does it handle? How reliable will it be? How much will a LT1 with a 6 speed cost me? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

i have a 72 240Z fully restored and show-quality upholstered. i don drive her much cuz its more fun to look at anyway lol, but when i do, it lacks power in all ways that power can be lacked, so i highly recommend a bigger powerplant if you want go more than good resto' and show.

do you recomend tearing the whole interior out.. sand blasting it if theres rust and primering? is it necessary? i think that will be my first step in the restoration.. then paint, then motor swap, and whatever i need to handle the power from the swap =P

my datsun was actually a combination of two 72s. one had a body in much better cond and the other had a lot more goodies and was in running condition. i bead blasted it a lil, welded in a plate on the passengerside floor, and had a shop coat it against further rust was all.

There are plenty of Datsuns with V8's swapped in.

IMO, you could stay with the inline 6... and swap in an RB26DETT. You'd stick with a Nissan motor and it'd be more true to the heritage of the old Z cars.

I'd actually swap to a nissan 4... and was looking into this.

RB26 will fit, and requires lots of custom bracketry. SR20 is the same work, makes alot of power, weighs less, and gives you a front/mid engine configuration because the whole engine is behind the front axle!

yea.. but turbos confuse me.. i think a v8 will be more reliable, isnt it? plus with some basic bolt ons.. you'll be pushing about or more power than turbos.

v8's add weight, and mess with the glorious handling of the Z's. I dont know about reliability, thats difficult to say with any hybrid.

really a question of whether torque or handling dynamics are more important to you

Probably less, by a very good amount. The L-series straight six used in the Z, as well as it's distant relative the RB-series, are iron block and probably kinda heavy.

yeah, IIRC the LS1 is TOO light, and the LT1 with aluminum heads weighs about the right amount.

what do you think the average price for a LS1 6 speed with 50-80k miles? and is it easy to do the swap? how much do you think labor will be if you pay someone?

But the LS1 will turn in better mileage, and its not hard to add a little weight to the nose if need be or just adjust the suspension so its got a little more on the nose.

i do agree though that LS1 and adding weight is better

Yes, assuming you can adjust the suspension (like coilovers) you can kinda set the F/R balance.
Not unlike corner weighting on a set of coilovers.
