    hard disk crashed

I've tried putting it in another machine, putting it in an external USB, booting from the original install disk and accessing the C drive that way.............all are teh fail.

I downloaded a few "data recovery" programs and one sees all the files and let me recover one (I guess to prove they can) but now it wants $90 before it'll do any more.

I'll spend it. But before I do, would anyone recommend a freeware version of some data recovery software? I checked sourceforge and they don't really have anything.

    help?

I don't know of any freeware, but I've used getdataback by Runtime software before with very good results.

The problem I have found is a lot of the cheaper software might work for most stuff but I have had problems with some of it. I know I have used some of the professional data recovery software and it is amazing.
The only problem is, is that it's expensive to purchase most of it.

I've used R-Studio before for getting files off a disk that was on a raid controller. It got most of the stuff off, but had problems with some of the files that were over ~50mb. There didn't seem to be any specific file type that it had problems with though, it was somewhat hit and miss.

That was one of the ones I tried. it seemed to find most stuff but that 50mb thing you said is interesting...the one thing it didn't find was my email PST and I know that's over 50mb.

The one I have now is Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery. It looks like it found everything, including the PST that r-studio didn't. So if I have to buy one, that's the one.

    Thanks for the help.
