one of the things I love most about my wife is her support in helping me better my craft. That includes very honest, and harsh critiques of my work, and occasionally sitting for me so I can try some new lighting, or PP techniques... She asked me to take some pics of her and our boys the other night, so I thought after we wrapped that up it would be a perfect opportunity to try some simple one light portraits.

    2. think I need to tone down the skin work about 15% on this one...

    5. this was my 1st attempt at any kind of "beauty" lighting... softbox up reflector down

    6. and a color one, just for fun

I still need to go back and clone some stray hairs here and there, but I'm most interested in getting feedback on the lighting. Thanks

I like the lighting in 3 and 4 best. 1 is too straight on, 2 needs to be toned down, and I'm not a fan of "beauty" lighting for portraits, especially soft B&W type stuff. Maybe color with something that pops, but not something intimate like this series.

6 could be good with a better pose. Tilt her head towards the light a bit.

Pretty nice set. I actually like the beauty light shot a lot. My main crit would be the softening...I think you got a little carried away, specially on that last one, starting to look a little plastic.

the last one actually had the least work done (assuming you're talking about the color shot) :o

I should also note these were all shot at around f/1.8-f/2.0

these look like they were taken close up with a wide angle... in general people look better when taken with a telephoto from farther away.

Yeah, I figured they were, I was looking at it closely and the last one just threw me off cause right under her right eye it looks really softened (like the minus-clarity tool in LR)

85mm, 100mm, or 135mm works better for portraits like these.

I liked them, she has beautiful eyes, and especially in number 5 you get a clear shot of them. I agree #6 has too much softening. Starting to look like glamor shots by deb.
