Sometimes when I try to view vids, it gives me the error saying that I need certain components to view the video. Then it sends me to the page with all the different programs with extra components. I don't want to download unnecessary stuff so what should I do?

I also apologize in advance for not searching for this topic if this is a repost :o

I'd love to hear the answer to this question. That little QT gimick pisses the living shit outta me too!

Why can't they just say "______ is the name of the codec/software you need, and you can download it here ______"

Instead, it's some sort of stupid guessing game. :madfawk:

are you trying to open divx avis with QT? that's usually why people see that error message... apple can't tell you where to download every codec (since when is it their problem that you want to run unsupported video on their player?) so they put up a generic message for you. makes sense to me :dunno:

also if you want to play divx in QT, 3ivx.com is a good place to start to find those codecs.

Apples have video problems. This is unfortunate. The solution is to download VLC. After downloading the WMV extension for Quicktime, I can now play anything I need to in Quicktime and VLC. Never had a file that wouldn't play in one of those. But yeah, it would be nice to not have to try quicktime and then fall back to VLC. Never actually had an AVI work in Quicktime, for instance.

 @ "fuck quicktime" -- Apple can support whatever codecs they wish... just because they chose to support a different (and more versatile) mpeg4 implementaiton than DivX doesn't mean they suck, it just means they're different. jeez. H.264 is superior to DivX anyway and Apple fully supports that.

Yes, I use QT 90% of the time (thanks to a DIVX codec installed in the QT folder, which plays DIVX .avi files, btw), and VLC for whatever won't work.

Yeah, and beta was superior to VHS, and look where that got Sony.

It wouldn't hurt Apple to provide a codec pack that would allow us to use THEIR software to view the 90% of the web content THEIR player won't play.

Oh, and  to you too.

its not rocket science people, don't make quicktime look like a shitty player for these shitty ass vids people post in the web. if the file doesn't open in QT, then I use VLC. VLC is just a little too buggy for me sometimes which is why it isn't my default.

:werd: DivX is a hack of mpeg4 and doesn't even really exist as it's own standard... why should any major player feel compelled to support it to begin with? Honestly, nothing of any professional consequence is done in DivX... truth be told, it's largely pirated material. For those that don't believe it, go to youtube, google video, or any other company / service-oriented website. *NO ONE* distributes with DivX. H.264, WMP 9/10 and other implementations are used because they are standards-compliant and actually supported.

You wanna use divx with qt fine, there are people that have written codecs that integrate with QT to do it, but don't expect software vendors to cater to every codec you want to watch porn on.

I'll expect software vendors to do what the market wants them to do. :dunno:
