I know quite a few of you guys are in the Dallas area. I feel like we're a minority around here with all of the gun ranges closing. Not sure if any of you are aware or frequented these places:

-Collin County Gun Range - apparently closed by the city of McKinney due to 'noise ordinace violations'. Shit, it was bad enough they had to close at dark and couldn't be open on Sunday, but now this crap? I don't think they are completely down for the count, but they have been closed since Aug30 :(

-Backwoods Traps - I actually live about 2 miles from this place and it was awesome. They were getting hassled by the developers in the area and by new homeowners. The new community that was built across the street ... DUH!, when you came out and looked at that lovely little parcel of dirt that your new home was going to be built on and heard the gunshots in the distance ... you thought those were going to stop when you moved in?? The owners finally gave in to the developers and sold ... I think it was either that or they were in for a long fight :(

I usually go to Bullet Trap in Plano for pistol, but an indoor 25yd rifle bay isn't going to cut it.

I went to check out Elm Fork (Luna Rd just off Northwest Hwy) a little while back. I hadn't been there in a couple of years and was quite disappointed in the changes. I guess due to insurance reasons they now have a 20ft tall pile of dirt directly in front of the rifle range benches. Buried in the pile of dirt is a 2ft diameter culvert/pipe that you have to shoot through to hit your target downrange. I understand the need for safety, but this is ridiculous ... it makes you feel like you're in a game or something.

Where else do you guys shoot rifles in the Dallas area?

I only go to Gibsons Outpost on Lawson Rd.

Nice friendly old man and friend of my dad's for years. Lots of cool WW2 German and Jap shit laying around. Huge firearms collector etc. Allows FMJ, but no shotguns. Has 15-30yd pistol ranges and 50-200 yd rifle ranges.

thanks for the info. It's quite a haul for me (I'm north of Frisco), but it looks like a pretty big range (I found it on google maps). Is it usually busy? I might have to head out there this weekend and check it out.

There is an outdoor range I have been to once its at Main street and I35W.

I needed to find some place too, I am in the same area as you.

I was hoping some place I can shoot steel core.. I didnt hear the Colin country gun range closed.

I go to bullettrap, but shooting an AR at 25yds is pointless

He allows pretty much anything out there except for .50BMG and shotguns. We shoot any and all military surplus ammo out there all the time.

As for business. Really depends on the time of year and opening seasons. But overall it's really not anything to the extreme of over crowding waiting on lanes etc.

Only thing that kinda blows is that the first time you go is rather expensive. Only because you pay for a membership, but anytime after that its $10 I believe.

I couldnt tell you. I've never renewed my membership there. I know it's not more than $30 and is good for a year.

this would be quite a drive for me, but I would be open to trying it out to find a decent range. It sucked backwoods was close to me, but they rarely had range officers so the idiots on the pistol range scared me.

The membership is like 10 or 15 bucks IIRC. We stopped going there because the last time the old man was being a jackass. First he runs down and accuses us of shooting a .50, which in fact was my friends semi-auto BAR (good thing we didn't have his real one there). Then later he comes hollering about this illegal short rifle which was a perfectly legal SBR that had the paperwork sitting on the bench.

I always thought of backwoods as being filled with a bunch of dicks. Never had any good shooting experience.

But in all honesty every range has its flaws and quirks. Id rather find me a couple hundred acres close by and set something up for myself, but wouldnt we all.:hs:

At the pistol ranges there was about 3 people right next to each other would run up to the target (onto the range) and open fire, rapid fire at like 2' from the target...
The rifle range I never had really a problem with.

I was always getting into trouble at the rifle range because of my "evil looking" weapons. They were constantly obsessing that I was shooting FMJ, when in turn I wasnt.

I think going to Gibson's would be worth the drive just for the fact I can shoot FMJ in my AR's. I just bought a couple ammo can's at the last gun show :big grin:
