After hauling around the 100-400 4.5-5.6 L I rented for this week, I decided that L glass is the bomb diggity. The pictures are so crisp it's ridiculous.

I want to replace the shit, err kit, lens and thought a EF 24-70 2.8 L would be about par to replace my current 18-55.

Am I really going to miss anything with that 6mm gone on the lower end? I doubt it, but figured I'd ask. Any opinions on the lens are much appreciated. :wavey:

Seriously (and I really mean this) get the 17-40 f/4L to replace your 18-55. You'll get WAY more mileage out of it than a 24-70 and it's 1/3 the cost.

Take a shot at 18mm, then one at 24mm. Will you miss that 6mm?

I want something with a longer range too, but I don't have the budget to go apeshit with lenses just yet. Gotta gradiate first. What's something non-L that would do for now?

My friend and his buddy are DJ's and their promoter is paying me to shoot some random photography at their gig tomorrow night. He said he wants me to be their exclusive photographer. It's not going to pay much, but I get free drinks and some side cash so it's not a bad deal. I think for the upcoming months I'd get more use out of a close range lens, so I'll definitely look at the 17-40 as far as L glass goes.

Those two lenses are pretty different focal lengths. Remember, the wider the focal length, the more degrees of view each MM gives you.

9mm is quite a bit wider than 10mm, but 29mm is not that much wider than 30mm, and the difference between 299mm and 300mm is virtually undetectable.

If you want near L-quality glass with USM and IS go for the 17-55 2.8 IS. Other than the dust issue, I only hear good things about the 17-55.

If you want to save a few bucks, try the Tamron 17-50 2.8. It's a great lens (more flare resistant) at less than half the cost. You loose 5mm, IS, and USM (although the Tamron focuses very quickly).

But if you think 24-70 is the right focal length for you, go for it. I've heard a lot of people say they love the lens, and quite a few that say they think it should be a little sharper than it is at 2.8. Also, if you plan on going FF in the future, and wide a wide angle zoom, the 24-70 is a no-brainer in that case.

Not by any means, it just popped up as the closest comparison I could find quickly on Google.

I'm craving a beer right now. New Glarus Spotted Cow actually. I Googled like mad to try and find a place locally that carries it, but the brewery states they don't ship their stuff out of state. Guess that holds true.

Therefore, I don't feel bad for you, beer drinker man.

seriously tho, look at what you mostly shoot. 90% of the time i have a 70-200 beast on my camera. the 17-40 usually chills on my coffee table. if your shooting night clubs tho...and im guessing on a 1.6x crop, grab his used 16-35. youll like that extra stop in the low light.

    Tamron 17 50 2.8 or Canon 17 40 4.0L if you're on a budget.

    :rofl::rofl::rofl: You're an idiot.

How exactly is the 17-40 "not in the same class" as the 24-70? :ugh::ugh:

By that logic then the 135 f/2L isn't in the same class as the 50 f/1.2L?

17-40L and the 24-70L are used for two totally different purposes... you can't compare them

I'd skip the 200 2.8 and just get the 135 and 1.4 converter...

Unless you already have the 135.
