I dont have a D3 to play around with yet so I figured Id look at the D700. Ill have the pictures up for the 5D soon. Sorry if theyre large. I wanted people to be sure to be able to see it all. If theyre too large, you need a bigger monitor anyways :mamoru:

Shots were taken from a tripod of a little room where I work. Its got a white-ish wall, a black poster, and then a nice shadow gradient. Ive got the image resized and then two 100% crops from the same areas. All were shot in JPG at the default settings that D700 comes with and then resized in Photoshop CS3.

The 5D, since its only goes to 3200, had to have the last two shots given +1 and +2 EC in post to give the same as 6400 and 12800 ISO. I know theres blown parts of the image by doing that, but since you dont have much noise in bright areas, I didnt care. It more shows what happens to the shadows when you boost them in post to get the general effect as in camera. When I do it again, Ill actuall underexpose the shot by 1 and 2 and then pull them back up because now that I think about it, thats what the camera is doing anyways. I know its not perfect, but its more than Ive ever seen plus I did it myself so I trust the results more.

All D700 shots were taken with the 70-200 VR also.

It also seems pretty clear that the Nikon 70-200 > Canon 70-200 :mamoru:

Also, this is odd but these two pictures were both taken at ISO 200, 1/50, f/2.8 but they look very different to me lighting wise.

hm, i'd rather have some more interesting test shots that show off color, contrast and lighting dynamics. besides the picture not being interesting at all, it's not a fair comparison for the d700 to go against super old technology. i do look forward to the d700 vs 5d successor.

that being said, thanks for taking the time to do this.

the D700 is also 3 years newer than the 5D, and more expensive.

the D700's ISO performance is definitely impressive, and definitely better than the 5D's, but it IS 3 years newer and quite a bit more expensive. I would HOPE that it would be better. If it was worse, the Nikon noise jokes would just get worse.

    Unfair comparison.

But hey if this what it takes for Nikon guys to feel good about them self, i am all for it

He says he didn't have a D3 to play with, i am assuming he wanted to do this with D3 vs 5D...Nikon people would of been 2x happier.
