is the lens that comes with the kit worth the extra $300 or would it be better to spend it on an aftermarket lens instead?

note: i do not know anything about lenses.

I've heard that a lot of people really like the kit lens on the D70.

I saw a couple posts on dpreview about how they aren't keeping up with demand and some places are now giving a cheaper lens as a kit. So watch out and make sure you get the real kit with the good lens.

I'm planning on getting a D70 sometime this summer (unless something better comes along) but sticking with the body only and then picking up two or three prime lenses. The first would probably be that nice 85mm/1.8.

Anyone know a good place to get a USA-warranty D70 body for less than MSRP?

Well, I think that lens is okay. You get what you paid for with the kit lens. The distortion at 18mm is really bad. Also the corners is pretty dark. You get the very obvious dark corners... However it is a respectable lens in its own right. It's got ED glass elements as well as SWM and IF. As a everyday lens, it is okay.

Now, I would probably give the new Sigma 18-125mm F3.5-5.6 a try before I go with the kit lens. This Sigma lens is currently unavaliable. OF course it will depends on how fast it focuses, since that Sigma does not have HSM

Hack I had probably gone with the 300D with 18-125mm lens if I get to choose again...

You'd only get that vignetting at 18mm and wide open... It would get annoying to fix all the time though...

Basically in low light (forcing you to use the widest aperture (f/3.5)) and shooting wide angle landscapes/scenery/etc (forcing you to use shortest focal length (18mm))

I still can't figure out why BLKDVLGSX was shooting at 18mm for that shot :dunno:
