My buddy is planning to upgrade from his D40 because of his poor choice of lenses that AF.
Would it be worth to find a mint D70 which would be around $400 or so, or to get a D80 which would run $800+ brand new.

Depends what he shoots, the D80 is going to perform a lot better in low light situations (high ISO).

D80 also has a larger viewfinder and LCD.

As well as a few more things...

The only reason to go with the D80 over the D70 is price.

Pretty much what I though. So the D80 is that much better it's worth twice as much?

Metering is more accurate on the D70. It's not much but it's something.

Ive been seeing d200's in the $600-$900 dollar range.. something to think about.

The current used prices are making the used d200's into quite the bargain. I might even say they are the best bang for the buck right now in terms of used digital dslrs... followed closely by the d80's when found in the $400 range.

The only advantage the D70 has over the D80 in my opinion in the 70 takes a CF card vs the SD on 80. :o

having had the d70 and liking it, I would say Nikon has improved a lot over the years and spending a little extra to get that little extra is worth it.

Do you want video? The iso performance is much better too for low light. Depends what you need/want.

    D70 has:

    better metering
higher flash sync speed (reason I will never get rid of this camera)
CF slot... which means you don't have to buy different memory when you upgrade your body.

Yep, I saw it on lensrentals.com. They are letting their D80's go because they are upgrading their entire inventory to the D80's successor, whatever that is.

    the D90

it's the newest in the "Amatuer" market. It's still better than the 40/60 but not on the level with the 300/3/700

however, I will probably skip it in my upgrade path unless I get a really good deal on one and my next body will be a 300:o
