I assume there is dust on the sensor :dunno:

That really pisses me off, it a brand new camera, anyway.

There is a local guy who does sensor cleaning for $75. In your opinion, is it safe to trust these guys? Will that void my warantee? Or should I just send it in to Nikon for a cleaning?

    Cheers

Buy a sensor cleaning kit. Don't pay anyone that much money to do it, it's a huge ripoff.

That guy would be making $75 for 5 minutes worth of work. Just be confident. The sensor has a glass plate over it, so there isnt as much to fear as you think.

Brand new cars sometimes have dirt on them. Big deal.

It's not a scary thing, and you don't need to shell out $75. Blow it off with a dust bulb, and if needed, swab it with a sensor cleaning kit.

    2 minutes max.

Done, just locked it open and used canned air to clean the filter.

Thanks guys. I'm a n3wb to DSLR. Been running film and sub-c digitals for years.

Oh and, did some reading in the meanwhile and (at least on the Nikons) they warn against using brush for lowpass filter.

I wouldn't use canned air ... all you are doing is blowing the dust around in there

I'm an even bigger noob to dSLRs, just bought a d50 yesterday, and when you shake it there's a rattling coming from the area the mode dial is in. My friend said it's probably the orientation sensor, I just wanted to check with you guys to see if it's normal. it doesn't sound like it's a loose screw in the casing, just sounds like a springy rattle :dunno:

It's the spring that's in the built in flash. Don't worry about it.

canned air is supposed to be a bad idea, i wouldnt do that again. i think the propellant leaves a residue or something.

That and the fact that it is blowing accelerated dust + whatever else ....could scratch the sensor

*Note to self - No canned air.

  13. If you do use can air make sure you spray alittle before you point it at your sensor because sometimes wet stuff comes out.
Getting that on the sensor would be a disaster!!!

Canned air sometimes will spray out the propellant in a liquid. A bulb is safer and cheaper.

edit: guess I should read the replies first..

PEC*PAD is not recommended for cleaning the CCD. It is not the same material used in the Sensor Swabs. PSI does not approve or warranty the CCD or any camera part from any damage caused by using non approved products.

    :noes: :noes: :noes:

I guess that they are covering themselves from idiots & trying to sell their premade swabs (which look cool).

I'll stick to the pads :o
