I currently have a d70, I have had it for a long time (since 04 I think). I invested a lot in glass and tripods and flashes and triggers and its finally time to get a new body. I am setting myself a goal to bring in a little more cash before biting the bullet but here is what I am pretty set on.

    Buy d300 used
    sell d70

A d300 will run me like 1100, and I will want a grip. Besides that, I have it all.

I am looking for iso and af performance. Does the d300 offer anything else that I should know about besides better iso, better af, better mp, better screen?

Just the feel of the D300 w/ a grip will be enough to not want to touch your D70 or another smaller lineup camera ever again. The ISO performance rocks IMO, specially over the D70 and D80, and the screen is the shit. Money well spent and you don't have to be a gear whore like me to enjoy a great camera like that. Specially since they're getting cheaper and cheaper by the month. :o

I'm thinking about upgrading my D70s soon, but not quite ready to jump - still contemplating my options, but the D300 is on the list, along with the new D90. I also hear that a D400 is coming soon too to add one more thing to the equation.

Where's a good place to look and see how much my current body is worth? I looked at a couple of the online quote things for 'trade in your old body' but they all say like $90 - at that point there IS no point in me trading in, I'd just keep the D70s as a back up or something for the wife to use.

    check ebay and craigslist

i just sold my D50 on craigslist for $300, so you can probably get at least that for the D70s

Good point, I always forget about CL for some reason. I checked ebay a while back, but it's fucking full of dealers now, hardly any average joe people just trying to sell their shit anymore.

Going from a D70 to any camera above the consumer level now is gonna be a huge leap. I was shooting around with my friend earlier this week and I felt like I needed a microscope looking at his D70's screen. Once you feel how tough the D300 is built and how much better it performs you'll be glad you spent the money on it.

yeah, i picked up a D300 in the store a month or so ago and immediately fell in love with the huge LCD. Mine looks like a postage stamp in comparison.
